I have a laptop (gateway 500MHZ Celeron 128MB SDRam 14' Screen, And Windows ME installed). Here is the background of my problem. I was playing a game (Half-Life) when the computer came up with a blue screen of death (BSOD) I pressed enter and it exited into a white screen and became completly unresponsive. I rebooted the computer and watched it go through its regular boot sequence. The computer has goback installed and so that is what it usually would go through before starting me. Goback froze and would not do any thing, So I rebooted the computer. The same problem kept on occuring. So I disabled Goback. The computer booted to ME seamingly fine, but the Desktop Icons all disapeared execpt a few. The start button would just become indented and do nothing, and When trying to open "My computer" windows pops up with the security error that Active X is not permitted by my current security settings. This still occurs in regular boot up. So I entered safe mode. I can "My Computer" works in Safe Mode but the start menu is still unresponsive. I tryed creating a new icon on the desktop, but It never appers. So I tryed to create a a new folder, It pops up with an error stating that that folder does not exist. Also when trying to make another Icon It will do the stander Command(x) (x where it adds the number of links on the desktop). I think that If I can find the System Restore Program that I might be able to fix it. Enabling Goback might also fix it. Any help? (BTW, This is my mothers Laptop and I dont belive that we have the Windows ME cd anymore)

System Restore is under Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.

Dates that have restore files available will he in bold print. Click on the first available date and tell it to restore. If that doesn't do it, then go back to the next date.

I I dont think that you read my message all the way through, I said that the start menu (button) does not work. Also I did manage to find System restore but It comes up with a white black screen. I found GoBack, but it only pops up and says that It cant run in safe mode.

Do yourself and your mom a huge favor. Get rid of Windows ME as fast as you can. I would run 2k or 98 on there instead of the biggest POS operating system. It's just not worth the headaches.

I would do I (belive me, I hate Win ME as much as the next person) but my mother is not so excited about upgrading. she still belives that Windows is incapable of causing its own problems. but ill try again. I possibly could get her to get the $93 edition of winXP Home from Newegg. But with the problem at hand, The data is still their and I could always put it on some floppy disks, but I prefer the cheapest way out still.
