Windows ME or 98SE?

Hi all,

I haven't used 98SE or ME since 2000 was available. I'm going to to go and install one of these on a friends computer later today. No 2000/XP because 1. I can't legally give it to her and 2. her system couldn't handle it anyway.

I seem to remember hearing horrible reviews of ME. Can anyone refresh my memory? Were these issues ever fixed in patches? Or is there a key reason(s) I should install 98SE over ME? She's a total end user, and basically all she wants is a stable and fast OS.

Thanks for any comments!

Then you have her go and buy Win2K and a little extra ram. Your asking for trouble with the Win9x-based OS'es.

It is not RAM that is the problem. She would essentially have to buy a new mobo, CPU, and RAM.

She is not willing to do that because she uses the system only for internet, email, and office.

Well..Then 98SE all the way. But be forewarned, Microsoft is supposed to be dropping support for 98 pretty soon from what I hear.

Actually ME did have some nice features and supposed fixes for past problems with
the Win9x family.

The problem was they added so many other unneccesary components
to justify its release that they ended up overbloating the install. And
by then people were finally coming around to seeing Win2k as a decent
alternative to Win98.

Windows ME proved that stupid people will buy anything. Stay away from it. It's not worth the CD it's written on. 🙁

actually i think thta was xp, the biggest smelly turd of an os ever until sp1, and now it takes 45 minutes to patch all the leaks in it.

I don't know what everyone is talking about 98SE being so horrible.

The only times I have had problems with it (beyond the usual MS bull) is not having the OS to do a clean install after changing motherboards / vid cards / and memory.

I am also a little dissapointed that there is effectively a memory "cap"...... That is just poor programing / built in obsoletism.

Hell, if my roomate could ever find the CD again, I would not even change my OS. But since I will have a copy of XP before he finds 98, I will have to suffer XP.

The same roomate claims the XP is sooooo much more stable, but even my unstable 98 install has given me less problems than XP gave him. So I really do not know which end of his body he is talking out of.

But I digress. If you must choose between 98 / ME, I say 98. The only thing ME did right (from my experience) is their version of Defrag. If she isn't going to use any other programs for maintainance, then at least copy the ME Defrag for her. (They are compatable, all you have to do is copy and paste. I used to have a link where you could download it..... I will look for it in a moment.)

EDIT:: Here is the link to download the ME defrag program. You have to scroll down a bit to get to the link. (It is at the end of a paragraph.)

Exactly how much ram does your friend have? The only thing xp/2000 needs more of than 98se is ram, and 2000 doesn't even need much more of that. My friend was running win2000 on a pentium 200 with 64mb of ram and it was just fine for web browsing/office stuff.

But Com807877 stated s/he doesn't have a liscenced copy to give the friend.

The only available choices are 98 and ME.

If my only choices were between win98SE and winME, I would install win98SE (and go into the corner and cry 😛 (jk))
