Windows ME is better than Windows 2000

It's an improvement. It is, at least, to some warped f-in' individual who happens to work at Best Buy.

I'm guessing he's A: never used Windows 2000, B: Never used Windows ME, or C: Was smoking some serious crack.

I feel sorry for the future consumers of the world.

ME is better for some users...just like NT4 wasn't appropriate for all consumers and it was better for them to use 9x. I dunno about you, but I can think of lots of people I wouldn't want to drop into 2K to wreak their usual "I didn't know how to do it right, so I just played around a little but I don't remember what I did" havoc...

Win95 OSR2 is the best. All successors have nothing but crappy, junky new features.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read the title of this thread :)

WinME is worse than 98SE as far as I am concerned. Everything seems slower in it. IE is MUCH slower than in 98SE, takes about a second after a click before it does anything, sometimes longer. Games run slower and with MUCH MORE JERKINESS :( and DVD's don't play nearly as smoothly as they do in Windows 98SE/2000. I am going to delete ME and put 98SE back on just for dolby digital while watching DVD's... for everything else there is Windows 2000 :)

I just loved telling the employee he was wrong.

him: "It's going to be better than 98 and 2000."
me: "No, it's not better."
him: "It'll be out soon and it has blah blah blah"
me: "Look, I already have it. It's no better than 98, not nearly as stable as Windows 2000, and sure as hell isn't better than Linux"

He then opened his mouth to speak again but then kind of just walked away.

I would have gone back to 98, but 98 was acting screwy on me so I just did a fresh install of ME. My girlfriend likes the new solitaire games so I guess I'll keep it on her PC :)

I hope you're not including W2K in that, and if you were you forgot the <opinion> tags.

What OS is best depends on the user. There are some users who without a doubt should use a 9x OS. They're just not ready to stray from some of the hand-holding features found in the 9x versions of Windows. Do you really think the average Joe who walks into Best Buy who uses AOL as his "ISP" really can handle trying to get his games running under W2K??

On second thought some people aren't ready to stray away from a calculator!! :D

If it's like when Win98 came out, Best Buy employees got it for free, so opinions could be jaded.

Just best buy employees get software for free? :)

Ironic point, but I've paid more money for Linux distros than I have ever for Dos/Windows.

I haven't had a chance to play around with Windows ME yet. Is there a general concensus that Win98 is better than ME? Or at least not worth the trouble to upgrade?

It would save a lot of hastle with the installing if that were true.

Are there some types of software or hardware that will not run on Windows 2000?

Or is just a question of, as stated, "hand holding"?

Hey I work at Best Buy. I don't know what the sales guy said to whoever, but I will tell you WinME will be great for your average computer user. Most people who shop at Best Buy or any other retailer don't even know how to install their printer. Do you have any idea how many "Computer Experts" that buy a computer from Best Buy and F up their computer by deleting some system file or some dumb thing like that? I run 2000 myself, but I can't wait for WindowsME to come out for the complete dumbf@cks. Thanks for listining.

I have to agree with A-Train. For 99.9% of users out there, WinME is the better OS. How many of you real techies go into bestbuy and actualy ask a salesperson for advice? (unless you're just bored). If Joe User goes in to upgrade his OS, I hope that the salesperson says WinME. While we all may have the know how to tweak win2k so it does what we want, most don't.

Is there any site that you trust for OS reviews?

IE the "Anand" or "Tom" of OS releases?

Yes, you need to check software compatibility and for W2K drivers. Some good sources for this are:
http://www.ntcompatible.com/

<< Is there any site that you trust for OS reviews? >>

I would take most reviews of anything with a grain if salt. I can't give you much here regarding reviews but are a few noteworthy OS sites.

Norton Utilities, Norton IS and win vpn isn't compatible and doesn't work properly in win me. that alone result to reformatting and back to win98se... ...

what a waste of time installing win me hoping it would run better and faster than win98se :(

From one of the suggested sites:

<< Windows 2000 had already come under fire by power users for making simple tasks require a mind-numbing series of steps. >>

This was my reaction to Windows NT, and one of the major reason I continued with Win95 rathered than NT. Is this guy wrong about this?

Actually, my current viewpoint is that from amongst Win98, Win2K and WinME, I would be happy to use whichever one allows you to prevent any process other than the keyboard or mouse from taking over focus. I can't stand the way that I will be typing this message, and then another browser window that has been taking several minutes to load a page of a slow site, finally does so, and jumps up in front of what I am typing! :I

I dont see what all these tweaks to make Win2K work would be?
It works just fine right out of the box, at least it has on the numerous comps Ive installed it on.
The diff is, after install, you can tweak it to work even better, while in ME, you can hardly tweak jack.
Of course, Linux/UNIX, that's where you can do some serious tweaking :)
