Windows ME Internet connection problem

My mom hosed her computer the other night. I've searched the net and she came into contact with some kind of spyware that corrupts your TCP/IP install as well as winsock and wsock32.dll files. There's no duplicates of either winsock dll file.

I want to format and install XP, but she desperately wants her favorite places and some other files saved. The CD-Burner no longer works and this spyware corrupted her system so badly that I can't even do \\192.168.1.102 to transfer files to another computer on the network.

Anyone know of a place where I can get ME .dll files? Google is no help.

All I can find are these old Gateway restoration discs. There's no actual ME install CD.

I have an "all windows" DVD with about 3 million versions of windows on it but this computer was built just before DVD drives became standard so it just has a normal drive and a burner.

Well then, go to where you d/l'ed the DVD image (i think I know where 😉) and just d/l a ME disk. It wont be illegal because you are using you own key. If you can't d/l one, ask a friend to, or borrow their copy.

Reinstalling ME over the corrupt installation won't work. I had this problem with a computer this week and I had to reformat and reinstall.

Uninstall TCP/IP and Dialup networking. in the registry find the Winsock & Winsock2 keys and delete them. Then reinstall Dial Up Networking and it will rebuild the keys, and also reinstall TCP/IP. Since you don't have the ME CD it may or may not work as I would also tell you to zap some .DLL's and reinstall them but with that restore CD you can't. Try the parts you can do above and it might fix it. Had it work for me a few times now even without the ME or 98 CD.

Windows ME in case you don't know this, usually has the install files in c:\Windows/Options/Cabs. If it asks for a CD during any of this try pointing it to that path.

Hope this helps. Been there many times with peoples 98 and ME installs.

The Winsock and Winsock32 keys are in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services

Zap any winsock keys. Make sure you uninstall Dialup networking first before you zap the winsock keys in the registry. To edit the registry go to run and type regedit.

Check Windows/options/cabs and see if it's there. If so the ME install files should be there.

Good Luck.
