I'm currently running '98se...

Is it worth it to buy Windows ME(full) for $130+tax from Staples or get the Upgrade for $30+tax?

Buy the upgrade, there is no point in wasting your $100 in the full.

LXi is right on that one.. even if you format your hard drives and run the ME Update setup from a DOS prompt it'll just ask you to insert your Win98SE disk once to insure you're 'elligeble' for upgrade then do just the same as the full version would.

Me is awesome. I've been using it without many errors for the past couple of months. For some gaming reasons, I tried using Windows 98 only to find that it ALWAYs crashes my machine.

Go for the upgrade and fool it with a 98 cd you may have laying around. Good luck!

Winme has the same freakin krenel as win98 it the same with a few more fetures added. if your looking for a os upgrade. Spend the extra bucks and get win2k not winme. The stability difference between the two is like night and day. winme should be only considered if its given to you for free then maybee you should consider upgrading to it.

I agree that you dont need the Full so that you can install it from the ground up
all you need is a Win98 CD to prove it is an upgrade

i play
q3 - actually faster in 2000
D2 - just as good
sc:bw - scrolls even smoother in 2000

Define many errors and Win98 ALWAYS crashing yout PC. Did ever think that Win98 ALWAYS crashing your system could mean that you have done something wrong? No matter how crap Win98 is it can't ALWAYS crash your system.

WinME is a POS.

Even though I wouldn't want to imagine life without Win2K, I have had no real problems with WinME. Granted, I don't use ME as my primary OS, it has served me well. BTW, I am not saying this because I was a beta tester. I certainly did a half-asred job at that, because I used Win2K too much. :)

I am a big fan of ME. Trouble-free really. Though I am not quite sure where my resources are going (now why does and Athlon600 show 50% usage when idling? Tell me).
Don't you have any kids or relatives who can get you the full ME on a student license?

WinME works fine for me. Takes a little time to get used to new features/functions thats all. Ppl sometimes don't like change, thats all. IMO WinME is not a POS and responds quite well. It might not be faster than Win98SE but the difference is not worth worrying about IMO.

It might be classed as a POS if the person that installs doesn't know what their doing. I have heard that the upgrade causes more problems than if you get the full version and install from scratch. I prefer this method personally.

However, having said that, if you have Win98SE, then I wouldn't bother upgrading. Wait for next release, which apparently will be a new product rather than just a beefed up upgrade.

Heehee I'm glad others will admit to liking ME too... I'm sure that most haters base it on their incompetence of installing it.
I'm so please with ME I'm considering doing a website devoted to it!

Rigoletto, how would you go about getting ME with a "student license"? Through the campus bookstore or something?

Base10, where are you getting the upgrade for $30? Thanks!

Unless you absolutly like havin da latest stuff, like me, i would suggest that you stay with win98se. There aint really nothin special with winME except for a few minor cosmetic changes and that autobackup thing which i never use.

Maybe we are doing something wrong, Rigoletto. ;)

730, Don't forget dat de WinMe has da new TCP/IP stack wich helps broadband internet speeds. My cable speeds have increased ~25%. (Yes, spelling was intentional. ;))

I ran Me since March... I can honestly say I like Win98SE better even if it takes longer to boot up. I had problems getting WinMe to network correctly with Win2k and NT boxes and at many lans. When I went back to 98SE, I didn't have nearly as many problems. I hated the dumbed down feeling it had too. Thats just me.

At least its compatible, I'll give it that. I think 98SE is just fine until you see some Me exclusive features (which I don't think will happen)

ME does give a dumbed down feeling. Anyway, I thought that ME had a bug in their upgrade version and anyone which just upgraded over 98 had major problems. I know of one person which did that already. He could only boot into safe mode and we had to uninstall ME to get the thing working.

From Staples, it's $49.95..add a 3" binder to bring it over $50 and then use one of those $20 of $50 coupon floating around...

ahh...

hmm.. I'm beginning to hear echo's in here.. I seem to recall saying things about the OS reflecting how the person uses his/her computer. if you don't treat your OS well, or make a mistake when installing it, you'll have constant trouble.

ME is only good in the hands of people who know how to install it properly. one mistake, and mysteriously, your computer will become crash prone.

anywho, for those who think Win2K is the best OS ever:
1) it eats system resources like nuts. MS is too lazy
2) MS has finally made an OS that doesn't crash constantly without proper treatment (ie, OS installation, etc).
3) it costs money! ahh! well I COULD look for a pirated version, but I would rather just get Linux! hehe..

ie, I don't like MS for the most part, becuase they've dumbed it down too much, and it's slow as hell on slow computers (a little optimization would be nice).

Yes of course I hate it because I don't know how to install it. I have been using a PC for 6 years now, I am currently running a trible boot Win2K, Win98 and Mandrake 7.2 and on top of all that I am studing Software Engineering. Spot on guys, I don't know how to install it properly.

I guess it's for the same reason that most WinME haters use Win2K, it's so much easier to install and it's virtually identical to Win98. Not like WinMe with all those fashinating new features such as Media Player 7!

BTW since it's so great why is it so cheap? Last week I saw it for £40 with a free microphone! LOL!
