Windows Me Boxed Circuit City $34 B&M

What killed ME as being any kind of improvement over 98SE was the horrid PC Health (System Restore and System File Protection) and half-baked WMI. Disabling them improves things, but not substantially.

Removing them altogether without consequence is nearly impossible as this garbage was tightly integrated with some components of the operating system (System File Protection, Help and Support, System Information, MSJVM, etc). I like a couple features of ME (image and folder preview, primarily), but nothing that can't be transplanted to 98SE with a little research.

Even though I am recently hooked on Windows XP (I've owned XP Home OEM CD for nearly a year but didn't install it until a few weeks ago), I still dig 98SE and plan to dual-boot some day.

unfortunately, any win9x virus will also affect winme.

It was pointed out that the version of Internet Exploder that came packaged with ME was horribley unstable, so years ago I installed the newest version of Int.Exp. after a format. It was more stable too........ for about 4 hours.

Well, let me throw my stone into this same sack o' rocks. I always wondered if it was me , but after trying to bring up a new system (it was a hybrid with everything imaginable) that never stabilized, I finally installed 98SE from scratch all over and all my problems went away. Still have ME on the shelf and wondered if MS ever worked the bugs out.

The only positive was that I only paid the introductory price which was $49 at the time. Always felt that MS got away with a scam on that one.

Is it the version that comes with the free ex-convict to sodomize you when you boot? Another MS 'feature'.

98 SE blows it away if you don't have XP. 😉

You hit the nail on the head there, ME was supposed to be '98 third edition, but it totally screwed it up with the addition of all the multimedia stuff, 98SE is the best for low-end machines.

2000 is probably the stablest Windows you can get, XP is slower but has better hardware compatibility.

Now if you could get 2000 Pro for $34, that would be a deal, but ME needs to be avoided like the plague!

I think that was key to having a good ME install.

I think everyone having more problems with ME than with SE are just ignorant.

I ran ME with 98Lite on my personal machine, a P3-700@933 on an Abit BX133-RAID for two years without problems or a reinstall. My current work machine is a P3-550@733 on an Asus P3V4X with 256MB RAM and I've been running this for, oh, maybe three years or so. I have not installed 98Lite on my work machine, just removed the Windows Restore stuff. I also leave my machine running 24/7 and only have to reboot once every few weeks when system resources get too low. I run PC Anywhere, Winfax and Tiny (web server) full time on the machine, plus it acts as a minor file server. Many people in the "CPU/Processors and Overclocking" forum have viewed web pages on my work machine (I post some computer mod pics, plus a page on FSB pin mods).

i don't know why the sexually-frustrated xp fanboys needed to run all up in here -- deal said Me right in the title! it didn't say xp!
store was out here 🙁 man i wish i could have gotten in on this one.

I like pizza too.

ME, the Edsel of OS's. Yeah, I guess you could install it on a blank HD then immediately upgrade to XP and save a few $$$ over a full install of XP but why start up those horrible ME induced nightmares all over again?

Why do we have to post even tho' is says "ME" right on the label? Because _nothing_ with ME is a hot deal unless they are paying you to take it. And then I'd take the money and use the disk as a target for my SKS. I suppose you could use it as a really cruel practical joke... install it on a "friend's" machine when he's not paying attention.

The ultimate virus...

it's a tool, nothing more
acting like xp is gonna marry yawl and bear yo children...
"ooooh xp, nobody does fat 32 like you doooo! do that to me one mo time, i can never get enough.... aaaaaahhhh!"
while waiting for the forum to load over here, why not troll in the power tool bbses on the net as well?
convince them that they need a drill when they ask for good deals on a tablesaw 😛
plus there are viruses that exploit xp, and ONLY xp -- sasser anyone? 🙂

I can't believe all the Linux fanatics on this forum. Everytime, someone says use Linux for your O/S, it just makes me laugh! Maybe, one day, when I can go into CompUSA or other retail stores, and they have 3-4 isles full of Linux software, then maybe, just maybe I'll consider Linux. And no I don't think all the "free" software for Linux is good. Mostly, it's all half-ass baked software. And yes, I do have to use Red Hat Linux at work on our servers. Personally I don't like it. Give me WinXP Pro any day.

If you have Win95 then upgrading to WinME is a good deal.

i wouldn't want it if they pay me for it. well, maybe i would if they provide me the computer.
not in one of my boxes. no way.

To use this for an upgrade path to XP or 2K, you do not have to actually install it. The 2000\XP Upgrade installer will just ask for the old Windows version CD to varify. It doesn't load anything, it just wants to make sure you have the CD. It will then continue to install a clean, Millenium Edition free version of XP or 2K. Doesn't copy a single file from the CD, and you don't have to load Me to start the upgrade.

Wow, this has to be the thread crap of the century.

Is it one of those 'Urban Legends' or did some of the techs at M$ actually term it 'Windows notforME'?

You don't go into CompUSA for Linux software as it's all free, CUSA could make no money from it when you can download it, and most of the good stuff comes bundled with the OS anyway.

With Linux, for the cost of 3 CD-R's you have most of the software you'll ever need. Pay $400 for XP and you'll have no software at all, except a bug-ridden web browser!

Win95 to WinME is not an upgrade, Linux is.

And I'm sure WinXP Pro ($400) would make a great server for your work, just think of all the spam you could send with those lovely trojans, and all the viruses you could collect..... 😛

I'm not even a "Linux fanatic", but you've got to be kidding if you think WinME is better!
