Windows ME and DMA

Hi,

Ok, I am blind, how do I tell if ME has my hard disk and DVD drive in DMA mode instead of PIO mode?

Also, since the real nice software that AnanTech uses to benchmark systems costs a lot of dollars, is there something that is free that I can use to check my machines performance? Hard disk, CPU RAM.

amd 900
mis kt7pro 2a
asus 7700dlx
ibm deskstar
toshiba 12xdvd

Boy it was fun to build a machine again...

To tell if your HDD or CD-ROM/DVD are using DMA - go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Maneger

Select your drive and click properties... there you will see the DMA check box - if it is checked, then your drive uses DMA - if it isn't checked you can try to enable it...altough I dubt that your drive will support DMA - becouse windows auto-detects "DMA" drives on every system startup

Not True Techmaster,

I am using WinME, and I have a WD 20.5GB (7200rpm) hard drive, and a BRAND new Plextor 12x10x32x CD-rw, and it didn't show as DMA on either one, I had to manually check them.

Well, I found them both turned off. Windows yelled, I forgot the message right now, but all seemed well. Then a couple of weird things happend. On reboot the computer did not ask me for my blank network password, (Got to fix that). So I booted a couple of times, moved some files around and it seems good. I played a DVD using the ASUS DVD software and it was PERFECT.... So I though all was well. I then installed Real MYST for some fun and the game would lock up in the intro looping on a sound bite. A reboot brought a message from Uncle Bill saying that my registry was corrupt, go figure... And the DMAs were off again.

I was reading something about the miniport drivers (whatever they are) and how they need to be installed. I think I have all the chipset drivers from MSI in and I see an AMD IDE driver installed in my add/remove programs.

I am wondering if I have a BIOS setting wrong or something... More research, but I tell you that with DMA on the machine screams, like it should

AMD900, MSI KT7pro2a, IBM deskstar drive, Toshiba 12 DVD. Corsair PC133 cas2 ram. This should let me DMA???????
