Windows MCE

Are you building a home theater PC? MCE is for watching/recording TV (DVR functionality), listening to music, viewing pictures, videos, etc. It has a 10' UI, meaning that it is easily readable on a TV from across a living room.

MCE is a complete OS, a different SKU just like XP Home and XP Pro. There are a few limitations. First, you can't join a domain (well you can, but it isn't recommended, and you can only do it during the initial install). The most annoying difference to me is no credman. So if you map a drive to another machine on your network, it won't remember those credentials.

Windows MCE is Windows XP Home with an application that provides an onscreen TV guide, the ability to play/record/pause/rewind TV (with a TV tuner card), play DVDs, play music, and display photos.

I believe this is the full version. I'm not sure if you can upgrade to MCE anyway. And yes, you should be able to do a full fresh install.

Windows MCE is Windows XP Home

Windows MCE is a version of XP with a feature set somewhat between Home and Pro (for example it includes remote desktop) and of course the media center features.
