Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail questions

I have been using Windows Mail since I started using Windows 7. I have always used Outlook Express in the previous versions of Windows so I just got used the layout.

Now just recently, Windows asked me to install Windows updates so I did. I noticed it was for the Silverlight update. Before it completed the update, it asked me if I wanted to install all the programs that are included with Silverlight or just update the programs that were already installed. I chose the later.

Now my email program is called Windows Live Mail which is different than Windows Mail. When I first opened Live Mail, it asked me to set it as the default email program and I did, oops.

To be honest I do not like Live Mail, I don't know if it because it is just different or what but I would rather have Windows Mail back. One thing that really bugs me is it shows an FPS number in three different screens with the program open, I have fraps running. I know I can just close fraps but why does it do that? I can not seem to find the Windows Mail program anywhere. Is Live Mail just an updated version of Windows Mail or are they two different programs? Is there a way to get Windows Mail back? Do I have to uninstall Silverlight?

You sure you had windows mail? It's not included with windows 7, only Vista. With Windows 7 they linked you to install the windows live essentials, which contains windows live mail...which is the successor to Windows Mail from Vista.

I'd guess you might have updated WLM to the recent 2011 version. There's probably some rendering happening with the GPU, so FRAPS is going to spit out a framerate.

Yes, it is possible to put Windows Mail in Win 7. I have it in three systems - I don't care for "Live" anything. The process is simple. Copy the entire WinMail folder from a good Vista setup on to a flash drive.

In Win 7, delete the entire WinMail folder (rendered null and void by Win7) and replace it with the good folder from Vista.

Win 7 has no built in email program. Rather than Live Mail, why not download and install the current version of Thunderbird from Mozilla? The interface is functionally close to what you are used to with WinMail.

Shouldn't Windows Mail still be on my system since I was using that prior to installing Silverlight? Or did Live Mail basically take Windows Mail over?

Instead of copying it from a Vista setup, which I have no access to, why couldn't I just download the program again?

It is likely that Silverlight and/or Win7 updates cancelled out your WinMail. It should still be there, but some of the files have been neutered.

Not sure if the download can be installed. Can't hurt to try. The best way is to replace all the files in Win7 with working files from another system - even a friend's.

T-Bird is an easy alternative.

I have been using Windows Mail since I started using Windows 7.
Then, you must have downloaded it, since it is NOT, by default, part of a Windows 7 installation. In other words, it does not come with Windows 7.
