Ok, i went out and bought a new motherboard because of the "no emulation" problem i was having. No it doesnt say anything about no emulation...it starts up and goes to Windows Setup....now while in the blue screen at the bottom it says "Setup is Starting Windows" but it freezes there everytime. this is a new computer and has never had an operating system on it..any help??

sounds like a memory issue.

download memtest 86 and run it for 24 hours or so. for details on memtest and how to use it, just search the forum or google, it's a commonly used troubleshooting tool.

if that turns up no errors and you have 2 or more sticks of ram, try one stick at a time. also try relaxing the timings / lowering the frequency of the ram. again, instructions on this are available via google or searching the forums.

hope this helps.

Are you pressing F6 as soon as setup starts then providing a mass storage controller driver via "S" and a floppy later on?

If setup is using a driver that is a loose match to the PNP id of your hard drive controller it might just be trying to fire up a bunk driver. The inbox (aka, on the CD) drivers with XP are getting really dated now. Anything beyond a simple IDE controller and you should be providing the driver when setup starts.

What motherboard is this? Give a specific make & model.

The drivers you need are on the CD that came with the motherboard. You'll need to get them moved to floppy. Since this is a hassle and there are possibly newer ones available on the manufacturers website, just give me the make and model of the motherboard and I'll post a link where you can download them. You can then download the drivers, extract to floppy and provide them when prompted.

Mind you if this process doesn't immediately get you past the lockup then you have a hardware problem. Cross that bridge if we have to...
