Windows loading really slowley

Hey all, got a little problem....

When i start my computer up, goes through all the bios checks, loads the windows boot screen, then i get a blank screen with my mouse pointer... At this stage i have to wait like 5min before the desktop and everything else loads...

Ive tried cleaning the registry with registry mechanic, defraging with diskkeeper, checked for viruses and spyware. However all of this did nothing to help.

Anyone know any program i can use to try improve this? or any insight?

Thanks

ICE

If you are confident that it's not a spyware/virus issue, then uninstall any apps loading on startup that aren't necessary. They won?t all be accessible in msconfig. You?re gonna have to search the registry. Known pigs like Norton Security Center should be uninstalled.

Empty the \\Windows\Prefetch directory and run this. Additionally check for the newest devices drivers to insure it's not a hardware problem.....

Good luck!

does it ever lag after start-up? or is it just a starting issue. i did something close to what doc is suggesting a couple months back and my start-up was dropped to about 30-45 seconds.
however, previously i was having trouble with constant drag and found that it was due to improper IDE controller settings (set to PIO rather than DMA)
might want to check that if the problem persists.
on the spyware subject, what program are you using?
generally speaking i use only one, ad-aware but have actually had to use a second (spybot) in conjunction with lavasofts when i find machines have already been infiltrated.
there are a few bits of spy-ware that have been known to force programs to give false negatives and prevent true updating. might want to try manual update to be sure.
