Windows Live One Care - $9.99 at Circuit City B&M

Nope...

"Windows Vista (codenamed "Longhorn") beta compatibility

Currently, Windows Live OneCare can be installed only on PCs running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2).
If you install Windows Live OneCare and then upgrade your operating system to Windows Vista, Windows Live OneCare will not run on future restarts, which will leave your computer unprotected. ..."

the ad shows the 9.99 version and for 58.99 an "installed" version.

what's the diffence?

for 9.99 I wouldn't mind giving MIcrosoft a try. they didn't really develop it anyhow just bought someone elses.

You're paying $49 to have a Circuit City supertech take 5 min. out of his busy schedule to install this particular piece of software.

Thanks man! Nice deal! I might buy a few copies for $9.99.

That would be the smart thing to do.

Oh yeah, I just picked up 3 copies for $9.99 each. Total of 9 licenses. NICE! 🙂 I guess there's no limit per customer. 🙂

Paying Microsoft for a program to fix problems caused by the holes in their own operating system. Classic.
No wonder Bill has Billions.
No thanks, I will stick with the Adaware, AVG, etc.

I bit and picked one up today. We'll see how I like it, if it seems nice enough, I'll grab another one @ $10.

installed the trial, its antivirus is slow compared to other big brands, not as much as a space/resource hog as symantec is. but windows defender is still in beta.

only good thing i see it has a 2-way firewall that alerts you to incoming attacks, the firewall ms gives with xp by default is a joke.

is the one from cc the demo or the full retail kit ?

It is the full kit.

I just finished installing it. I found it odd as well that it considers Defender as one of the components, even though it's still "beta". The setup actually has you download the installer from the MS website.

Are you sure it isn't a typo?

Sorry. I thought I had read $49.99 this morning but I checked again and sure enough it says $9.99. I will probably pick up like three or four of these too.

So do you get the CD or you have to bring your comp in?

It's a CD in a case with a booklet in a box. Product key printed on your standard MS orange rectangular sticker on the back of the case.

I wouldn't buy more than 3, as the product key stickers say on them that it must be activated by 12/31/2008.

Unless you plan on giving them away to people 🙂

They're slowly showing up on eBay....

After running through all the components except for the Backup, I can honestly say that there is no way in h3ll I would pay $50 for this thing. At $10 though, I think it's a good deal for the AV Subscription.

The fact that it uses Defender BETA as one of it's "features" is a joke. Also, the "Tune-up" does the following:

- Removes "unnecessary" files from your computer
- Runs Defrag
- Checks for viruses
- Checks for files needing backup
- Checks for missing updates

So, basically it does nothing you couldn't simply do with a few clicks on your own.

At this point, unless the Backup and Restore is something phoenomenal, I'd say it's worth $10 but nothing more.

By the time I got to CC today they were all sold out. Hopefully they will restock later on in the week. Sucks to miss out on your own hot deal. 🙁

I asked the CC sales guy where MS OneCare is located and he looked at me with a puzzled look on his face. He did't know what the heck I was talking about. But then I found teh shelf and picked three up. 🙂

I just installed it and it's not bad. I wouldn't pay $50 for it though. But for $10, how can you pass that up? I didn't install Defender as it is beta and I'm not big on installing beta software. I'll wait for Defender to go final, and then I'll install it.
