IM so tired of this issue it's driving me absolutely insane. It happens in XP AND Vista, yes I dual boot.

Well, I neevr was able to solve the issue in vista so I simply don't boot to vista anymore. A few months later it started happening in XP. I have no idea what the hell's going on. Every time I try a new keyboard or mouse the same issue occurs.

These are connected via USB. I plug into my 1907FP LCD monitor, then the monitor connects to my tower (keyboard and mouse cannot reach tower). If I plug directly into the tower, my mouse works but the keyboard still doesnt. Windows wont even recognize it.

Why the hell would a retarded issue like this keep happening? It's seriously driving me crazy

20 dollars paypaled to whoever solves it

It's like windows keeps erasing the drivers or something. These a generic devices so I cant go download drivers. Windows is supposed to have them already installed!

Sounds like your usb ports on your motherboard are flaking out and going bad. You might want to try picking up a cheap usb pci card and installing it in your pc.

Then see if you have the same problems with your devices plugged in there. If you don't, then you'll either have to keep the card or replace the motherboard.

OOOH 20 bucks, lets see, that is about £10 in proper money - should be enough to buy myself a helicopter and escape from this godforsaken place.

Try booting up with a live cd of knoppix - see if kb and mouse work without a problem.
Also, can you access BIOS screen in your system - does you kb work without a problem before you get to windows?
If you can get into BIOS, make sure 'enable legacy USB keyboard' is enabled.

It's not that because I can use my keyboard fine in bios. So obviously there's not a usb port issue on the motherboard. Also, that wouldnt make sense as to why the issue would only affect Vista at one point, then months later move to XP as well. Good thinking , I'm pretty sure I don't need to spend any money on a new MB or PCI card though.

Was Vista or XP installed first?
Are they in different partitions?
What boot manager are you using?

Boot into Windows XP SP2 with a PS2 keyboard
Go into c:\windows\inf (show all hidden files and system files if you don't see it)
Make a new directory in there called Test
Move all OEM*.* files into Test directory (move, don't copy)
Reboot with the USB keyboard/mouse attached
Does anything different happen?

XP

They are on separate hard drives. C for XP and F for Vista. I think I used BC edit to help set up the dual booting process.

I think I used BCDedit, I'm not sure though. It was a while ago. i don't think it has anything to do with the boot manager. It worked fine for a few weeks before this issue began occurring. I had not fiddled with boot manager at all. Only when the OS was freshly installed.

I'll give this a shot...

First though:
Are these instructions for XP, Vista, Or both. SP2 keyboard will not work when booted into vista. No keyboards or mice, no matter what. I've tried several and the result is always the same.

I can boot into XP (located on C) and adjust files on the F drive where vista is located.

I'm slightly apprehensive about moving these files around. Can I get some assurance that all will be well?

If you do move all the files and IF there is a problem, then it just means booting into recovery console to move them back again - not a big job as long as you know your dos commands (but recovery console does provide a list of all commands and how to use them anyway).

OS:Check the Boot into... line in my post. :)
Apprehension: OK - what happens in safe mode?
Apprehension 2.0: Make a BartPE boot CD first. You can use that to put files back in place. Google "Bart PE" for info. It might take you 10 minutes; don't add any add-in programs, and test it prior to doing anything.

...but there's somewhere between no and tiny risk in this - the files you're moving are OEM files, not from-Microsoft files.

OK, do this next, in sequence:
Reboot.
Plug in and out the USB keyboard and mouse (in XP) 2-3x and let me know that it still doesn't work correctly (just the keyboard, right?).
give me a copy of your c:\windows\setup*.* files in c:\windows, and let me look at them. There's nothing personal in there - feel free to look them over prior to sending.
Run MPS Reports (see my .sig) and give me the computername.cab file.

At least he is offering something to someone who helps him out, a kind gesture if you ask me
