Windows is lagging/freezing..

Just recently, I've started encountering problems with windows lagging up. For example, I would right click and then it would be several seconds before the menu would pop up, or I would type in address, and there will be a delay, then the browser starts going. What could be going on? This happens every few seconds or so. I ran windows update, and that didn't fix anything. It also takes rediculously long for windows to load up. It would be stuck on the welcome screen for at least 20 seconds.

Anything installed around about the time it started lagging? I'd try reinstalling the mobo drivers and also do a defrag

Nothing installed. My sister has been using my comp, so she might have downloaded something without me knowing. I've ran spybot, and nothing was found.

Never thought about event viewer. There definately seems to be a prblem, every 2 seconds, there are 2 errors. The two sources are:

Ultra : Event 26 The driver has detected that device %1 has old or out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may result.
Disk : Event 51 An error was detected on device %1 during a paging operation.

Is my HDD going bad?

once had a comp that did that, massive spyware invasion.

also check hd's. download speedfan or some other utility that can check the drives SMART condition readings. if its nearing failure, that will show it no doubt. that or the hd manufacturers own diag software off their website.

I think I might have found the problem. One of my hard drives is split into two partitions. I just noticed that one of the partitions is no longer accessible. The drive letter is there, but when I try to access it, it stalls and I get an I/O error. I ran Western Digital's diagnostic tool on that specifc drive and got the following:

Test Option: QUICK TEST
Model Number: Maxtor 6Y160P0
Serial Number: Y422RDKE
Firmware Number: AY4RB10W
Drive Type: IDE
Port Number: 2, Secondary/Master
Capacity: 134.22 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 3 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 03 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 3!

Is my drive shot? 🙁
