Hey guys...

My Windows installer seems to be seriously MESSED ... I say this, because any program that requires Windows installer... now wont install...

I get "Error 1305" which is "Fatal error during installation." or something like that...

it says "Verify the file exists, and retry" ... well, the file exists... but it wont install...

So I re-run the setup package... it does it to a new file... etc. etc. etc.

I re-run it the 35th time, and it works... no problems at all...

Anyone have any idea what the hell is wrong with this thing ? Can I re-install it in XP ? Is this just -my- problem or has anyone else experianced this ?

you can reinstall Microsoft Installer. YOu can download it from Microsoft. Have you tried installing the service pack?

There is chance it could be virus.

Using Windows XP, I dont think it is possible to re-install... The only files on Microsofts website are for 9x and for 2000/NT ... doesnt work on XP.

Argh!! I dont want to format... :(

Argh... problem is -still- here... I cant install hardly any software... I was trying to install a game... and sometimes it gets to 8%... sometimes 45%.... sometimes 74%... but it never finishes... it keeps saying that the file is write protected or may be in use... but its not... I have a feeling the only thing I can do to fix this is format and re-install, but I dont want to do that... :(

Anyone have any advice for a system running XP ? There is no downloads from MS for it, and there is no add/remove for it in XP... argh!!!

Any help is appriciated!

Just out of curiosity, try this:

  • Go into Windows Explorer and go to C:\WINNT\Temp or C:\WINDOWS\Temp, whatever XP calls the Windows directory
  • Delete everything in there
  • Copy the software's installation files into C:\WINNT\Temp or C:\WINDOWS\Temp, whichever, and try running them from there
I've noticed some of this behavior with Win2000 after installing some of the latest patches, or perhaps it's SP4 itself. Give it a try, anyway... it works on my problem, maybe yours too. :)
