I am wanting to make a CD for windows 98, 98se, 2000, and XP with all the critical hotfixes for these .. does anyone know a site with a list and/or the downloads? i dont want to use autopatcher xp or whatever.. and i need for all versions of windows except 95 and NT.. thanks

Well, one good place that I find where you can start is here - Multiboot DVD also on the same site is Unattened XP Cd from MSFN

They have both good guide and forums for the types of cds that you are interested in makeing. Will be a little harder for the win 95/98 oses as they work alot differnetly than windows 2000 and xp

to be honest i dont need anything that complex.. just a simple structure with all the hotfixes, my problem lies in teh area that i dont know which hotfixes are critical and which ones apply to each OS..

all i need is a list of the hotfixes to throw onto CD.. i deal alot with setting up brand new computers and i dont want to have to goto the windows update site on each machine and update..

thanks

Since you have to apply some of them separately from the others anyway, why not just use Windows Update? It a lot faster and easier and you don't have to worry about what goes with which OS and such since it tells you.

Plus with a CD/DVD you'll just have to keep updating it all the time anyway with new updates, plus MS always combines their updates after a while and groups them together so then if you use that ou might be installing the same ones multiple times which is a waste of time...

ya its just easier... i do about 5 of these a day and put the hotfixes on my file server and access them that way.. which i wouldnt mind spending 15mins checking to see if any new ones come out each day..

now.. i was reading technet and when each hotfix is installed it puts a key in the registry.. i want to make a visual basic application to check to see if the ones are installed or not and if not install them, this is incase the manufactor put some on their before it was sent out?? does this sound ok?

thanks

p.s. the windows update site requires internet conection and all we have at our bench is dialup it would take a long time versus what this setup does.

You could write a VB script or just write a batch and Qchain them for the XP and Win2K updates. I think MS put out a last and final service pack for 98 but I cant remember the name of it.

I just put together a 98se machine for my sister and I used a cd that I recently received from MS, which I found Here on Anands It worked great. I just did it last night so I haven't had the chance to see exactly what updates were and were not done. One thing is for sure it sure as hell beat going to through windows update. Also, there is a way to download the files. I recently did it because I couldn't get the Office XP SP3 to download and install correctly. I think it labeled for administrators.

I beleive windows has an update CD available, either for free or pretty cheap (i.e. probably just covering costs). Not sure how it works but I'd assume it's basically something like the windows update site on a disk. I read the updates on it are several months old, and possibly this is only avilable for winXP, but at least sounds like the sort of thing that you're after?

TBH I've no idea why MS dont seem to allow/encourage magazines to do something like this on their cover CDs, all it can do is have more people more easily update Windows, and wouldnt cost them anything - just save them a fair bit of bandwidth.
