Windows Home Server

Text

As a heavy MCE user, I am giddy with anticipation for this product. As it stands now, my MCE box is hooked up to my TV and all of my media and documents are stored on it. It also does nightly backups to an external drive and whenever I remember to, I do backups to DVDs. Not an ideal situation. I hope to be able to move my storage to this device and replace my MCE box with a Vista box, move it to the desktop (retiring my old and tired XP desktop) and replace the empty hole in my entertainment center with a 360. Yes, I am pretty much just going to hand over my bank account info to MS on the day I make those purchases.

Anyways, back to WHS...looks like it will be available as an OEM SKU, which is wonderful for enthusiasts. I'm not sure if I've learned my lesson from the machinations I went through with OEM MCE, but WHS should be considerably less complicated as my MCE problems were all related to TV tuning.

So the network-wide image based backups sound fantastic. As does centralized RDP connections (sounds like Remote Web Workplace, which I love). What I'm really excited about is remote streaming of media...as much as I love Orb on my MCE box, this could definitely take its place if it works well...Orb is great, but pretty darn flaky.

Now, just to wait for details to flesh out. Hopefully, the featureset is as Thurrot states and not as others have feared (no streaming to MCE boxes).

Oh yeah, I almost forgot my dream for what this product COULD be. If it could accept a couple of digital cable tuners. How great would it be to shove a server with a ton of storage and a couple tuners in a closet with power, cable and network hookups, then just just manage recordings/stream your media from PCs and MC Extenders/XBoxes? That's what I REALLY want.

Uhh well thats what I do 🙂
Well not digital cable tuners but standard TV cards (good enough for my purposes). Sits in basement and feeds my 2 PCs and 2 XBMC in the house. Stores all my... umm... downloaded video content, mp3s, jpgs etc etc.

THIS is how a home should be set up. Plain and simple. I've been saying it for years now. The home setup should be NO DIFFERENT than any office set up. Central server(s) holding data (and backing up where applicable) and clients accessing that data. Hell I even have orb (orb.com) set up on the server so I can watch video/tv wherever I am.

Yeah, I guess I didn't make myself clear (too much coffee this morning). I know you can do so with an MCE (or any other DVR software) box already, I just would like it combined with the other new WHS technologies (backups, remote access, etc) into a true, total Media Server system. Something like that would totally satisfy your second statement, which I agree with wholeheartedly.
