Windows Home Server question

Hey if i build a WHS machine and i start off with one 750 gig drive can i later replace the 750gig drive with a 2tb drive? In other words will WHS let me migrate the information from the 750 to the 2t so i can take the 750 out permanently?

I'm not 100% sure but I think you'd be able to image your current drive and put that image on the new hard drive.

That said, it's really easy to just add the second hard drive and have WHS add it to your storage pool. I would think about just adding the second drive if you have the room for it in your case. I'm running 6 separate drives in my WHS and it works great.

Nope, no imaging.

The OS partition need to be freshly installed on the new drive.

Data is stored in regular format and can be copied to the new drive after the OS is installed and running.

I put a post in the OS forum recently about cloning a WHS System drive to a newer, bigger drive. It CAN be done, but there are steps after the cloning. The Volume ID has to be changed to match the original, and some Registry entries have to be modified to match the new disk.

Someone just told me that "the next Service Pack" (I assume he meant Power Pack) of WHS will have the ability to easily replace the System drive.

That would be nice -- a built-in method to transfer the system volume to a new drive.

I did not wanted even to mention it.

But since RebateMonger opened the "Pandora Box".

Enjoy, http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6826

AFAIC it does not worth the Time and the risk.
It probably wouldn't be too hard for Microsoft to create a "replace system disk" option inside WHS. Basically, they'd need to offer a backup of the "backup database" (or move all the backup files off the System disk) and then force any shared data files off the System disk and onto the Data disks. You'd then shut it down.

Next, you'd do a standard WHS system recovery on the new System disk. The WHS "re-install" routine would take care of all the stuff that's currently inside Padora's Box. The problem right now is that you aren't offered a "nice" way to remove and replace the System disk. There may be shared data on the System disk, as well as some of the "backup database" of all the backup clients.

Yeah, you are right I have No idea why they did not change this type of OS behavior until now.

Hopefully the next major upgrade would take care of it.
