Hi, can someone suggest what mother board/cpu combo for me. I am looking at i3-2100 or i3-2100t for the low wattage. I want to build a home server machine to store all my movie, picture, music....etc, I have 2 computer and htpc will access the files and to do a backup. I already have case, 500 gb hdd, 430 watt psu (antec), 8gb ram, will be using the 2x 2tb hdd which is on my other computer. It will be 24/7.

thank you

O.k it seem like no one willing to help or I didn't post it the right way. Should I go with z68 board or p67 board.

You just need to give more time.

The P67 chipset doesn't allow the use of the IGP, so your choices are Z68 or H67. If the H67 isn't cheaper, then you might as well go with the Z68.

As for which specific board... any decent brand with the features you want at the lowest price.

Why waste the money on a Z68 motherboard? You won't use any of the features that gives you on a WHS system. Why not just buy a cheap H67 or even H61 board?

H61 doesn't have enough SATA ports. He could do an H67 board but you'd be closing in on $100 anyway so might as well go Z68.

Personally I'd probably go with a cheaper Biostar or Asrock though.

Like this one for $99 bucks

Or he could save $25 and go with an ASRock H61 board that has the same number of sata ports, and is mATX which could be useful for case selection depending on how big he wants the system to be.

this GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 also $99 that i linked above, any reason to go for the Biostar z68 board? and that ASRock H61 board look very good for the price too. thank you, I will pull the triger tonight.

Well, I personally have not had good luck with Gigabyte recently, a P67 and an AM3 board (although for a long while they were my go-to manufacturer). There's also quite a few people reporting problems with their Z68 Gigabyte boards. I don't like to shit on manufacturers overall, but in general right now I wouldn't want to take the chance on a Gigabyte until reports are better.

Odd, I thought the H61 only supported 3GB SATA ports.

I love my ASRock Extreme6 so I would agree this is probably a good choice as well. I was gonna suggest mATX also but he posted two full ATX boards, figured that's what he wanted.

O.k thank, I am going to buy that h61 board with i3-2100. all of this will be in antec 300 case, antech 430 watt, 8gig of g.skill 1333 ram, wd blue 500gig hdd for os, and 1 2tb seagate and 1 2tb samsung hdd for datta, of cause os will be whs 2011. And one more question, will this ASRock H61 board can under volt i3-2100 or should I go with the i3-2100t?

Yep, all that stuff will work together. 8GB for a WHS build is overkill though.

From what I can tell from the manual, yes the ASRock board can undervolt the CPU.

I know 8GB is overkill, but I got it couple week ago from the shell shocker deal. Thank you.

have you considered the zacate platform? IMO makes a wonderful low wattage server. Throw 4GB in there since you are running WHS and call it a day.

Yes I has, the reason why I go with i3 and h61 are that i need more sata port and my case is not an itx format.

Good I didn't order it last night, I just see this biostar h67 board for sale for $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138308 I am going to wait and will buy this instead. Do you guy think is good.

Thank.

sounds sufficient. i would trust biostar if my plan is to run at stock (or below stock speeds).

asus makes a micro-atx zacate board, i thought that one in particular would make a good server board because you could easily install sata expansion cards or a raid controller.

I will keep it as stock, sound good then, thank.

Can I set some kind of raid in freenas with this two drive that have different speed, will it cause any problem latter on. right now in the process of moving some data so i can move the 2 hdd to the new system:.

thank

Yes, you can set up a software RAID in FreeNAS between any two drives. Normally, it's not recommended to mix and match speeds for performance reasons. 5400RPM vs. 5900RPM isn't going to be a problem though.
