Windows Home Server 2011 Ships to Testers...

The number of replies for this thread is really tell-tale.😛

Even I'm not sure I care about WHS anymore now that it lacks Drive Extender.

Yeah, just pointless to have it. What a step backwards...just ignoring the community and their requests. Would have loved to have seen MC integrated into it, but noooo. Ruin it instead. Asshats.

The question I ask is, given what has changed why should I bother to 'upgrade' to WHS2011?

Yeah, i can see your point.

The better alternative might be the current release WHS pp3

Right now it is still available, I have No idea what would would be its status ones the Vail RTM comes out.

Fixed. :sneaky:

Yeah, that seems a reasonable change, I just hope Microsoft are taking notes. 😎

Whats the odds they release it like this, everyone stays on WHSv1 and Microsoft says 'theres obviously no market for a home server product' and flounces off?

Thats what I use. Its fantastic.

Even the wife uses it, she doesn't know shes using it, but it does all her backups and allows her to see all the shared photos and media in the house.

Thats why its great, its really easy.

Edit: Not sure why you linked Foxit though, not that foxit isnt good...

At least it wasn't something worse on the clipboard! 😀

There wasn't much they had to do.

Transition to modern code base. So support for 64 bit (more memory available), larger hard drives and GPT, and better driver support (modern NICs, sata drivers, etc).
Add MC in some manner. Preferably as a full back end option with server-side recording, and whole house guide integration. Allow for backup backups, and server backups.

Throw some polish on everything, come up with an easy to build plugin system with a simple and clearly defined developers kit, and then ship it out.

I think everyone here would say ""OH HELL YEAH" I would certainly be at least preparing to transition over time (probably with a dual server setup for awhile).

I'd be surprised if one of the utility vendors like Acronis or Symantec wasn't already working a drive extender add-on product for WHS 2011... it seems like it would sell well.

To be fair, something as flexible as DE is: a) Hard to make, and b) Requires even more Q&A.

Certainly it's possible; I wouldn't expect to see a commercial product for WHS 2011 any time soon.

Semantic? They bough their firewall 10 years ago from At-Guard

Ten years later and they still can not make it working correctly.

Acronis writes great software but they never offered True Image for WHS.

I think it is because of the extender.

I would Not be surprised that they will offer one for Vail, because there is No extender in it.

AFAIK the first DE was done entirely in userland and kinda hacky, although it seemed to work. A 3rd party could probably do something just as reliable as a service and handle the duplication all in userland with some special directory like System Volume Information. Windows has to have something similar to inotify that can be used to watch for file activity. People muddled through the first DE's nasty dataloss issues...

I won't miss DE that much or WHS, tbh. I finally retired my MediaSmart after a drive failed and I had to go digging around the file system to recover my data. If I went through the shares like normal, the data showed up, but I would get an error about the device not existing when trying to open anything.

The data was on the other drives in the system, but because I couldn't remove the failed drive cleanly, the system was still pointing me to the dead drive.

Now I just have everything on my Iomega ix4-200. I have it set up in RAID10 with NFS enabled and I also use it as shared storage for my VMware hosts. Cloudberry backs everything up to Amazon. Which is basically the same setup I had before but now if a drive fails, I know that my data will still be accessible without jumping through hoops.
