Windows hangs

I have windows 7 ultimate. Occasionally when I boot up it will hang before the four color form a window logo. I googled every single last post, pull out all usb, pull out all harddrive except the one with OS. reinstall video driver, run kapasky rescue disk, run repair. No help, it hangs 1/3 time whenever I boot my computer up.

Also 1/3 it will hang at the flashing underscore. That means whenever I boot there's 2/3 times that I need to reboot it again to try my luck.

Can it be my harddrive is faulty? I'm using a vortex III 128gb

can it be my 4 years old PSU? i'm using a 1000w coolermaster silent pro 80 gold plus.

can it be my motherboard? Rampage V extreme

Can it be ram? ripjaw 8x4gb total of 32gb.

How eliminate my hypothesis i listed above?

Thanks

It is because windows is junk. Every pc I've ever had hangs some percentage of the time. Typically that percentage is low, around 5%, but still it is pretty sad. If you go to the store and buy any new PC, I bet it hangs at bootup at least once if you run a 25 cycle test. What really irks me is why doesnt it just say what it is doing instead of displaying some stupid graphic. Even when you turn the graphic off and have it display as much data as it can, it still doesnt tell you very much.

My money is on the drive. Try switching the cable. That's solved things like this for me a couple times.

When you say "hangs" do you mean it hangs and will never boot, or that it pauses but finally boots?

I dont really sit there and time my boot up, but I have been using PCs for nearly 20 years and don't recall having windows "hang" to the point of not booting unless there was a hardware problem. Usually it was a failing hard drive, but once it was a cd-rom that was bad.

In this particular case, I am with the other posters who are suspecting it is the hard drive going bad. I hope you have a backup of any critical files.

I suppose you could just assume Windows is junk and get something else. I am not one of those people.

Does it ever hang while you are in Windows? The first suspect from what you have listed would be an old OCZ SSD. Those drives are the opposite of reliable. But the reason for it not to be suspect would be if it ONLY occurs while booting.

That would narrow it down to the power supply and the motherboard in my book. Could probably narrow it down further if we know more about the boots. Are the failing boots all cold boots, or does this occur on reboots as well?

So just to recap:
1. Does it ever freeze once you are in Windows?
2. Does it only freeze on a cold boot?

Put memtest86+ on a USB key and boot to the key to verify memory.
It's Win7, so safe mode should still be hitting F8 at boot time. Can you reliably boot safe mode?

Sounds like the hard drive. You should be lucky your older OCZ drive lasted this long. You should get a newer larger drive and try to clone your OCZ to it before it gets worse.
