Got a new rig up & running this weekend. Here's the details:
Motherboard: EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA3800BVBOX
Video: AOpen 91.05210.66U Geforce 6600 256MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card
RAM: Crucial 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model CT12864Z40B.M16FD (2 each)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3160812AS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (2 each configured for non-RAID)
DVD: PLEXTOR Black IDE DVD Burner Model PX-740A/SW-BL
Version Info:
System BIOS - NVidia Version 08/04/2005-NF-CK804-6A61FPA9C-00
Video BIOS - 5.43.02.27
OS - Windows XP Pro, SP2
The BIOS is confiured to use 'safe' settings, e.g., there is no over-clocking taking place.
Here's the (minor) problem:
Occassionally, during a software-initiated reboot (such as occurs after installing software, or selecting "Restart" when shutting down Windows), the POST completes normally and the Windows-XP screen displays. However, once in a while the "progress bar" hangs and Windows refuses to finish loading. The HD indicator LED light on the case is lit continuously, instead of flashing like you'd see during normal read/write activity. At this point, I have no choice but to hit the 'Reset' button to reboot the computer. After the POST completes, Windows informs me the last restart was unsuccessful and I instruct it to boot normally.
Again, this error only occurs maybe once out of ten times, and then only during a software-initiated reboot. If I do a full system shutdown (including a power off & on) or a hardware reboot via the reset switch, the error doesn't happen.
I have not yet connected the PC to the internet, so I have not yet had the chance to download and install any Windows hot fixes.
It is a minor annoyance, but I'd still like to know how to address it and possibly resolve it. Any suggestions?
