Hey,

System specs:

Gigabyte 7DXR MB
512 MB PC2100 DDR Ram
MSI GF4 64MB ti4200
Buslink DVD
Memorex CDRW
MS Explorer Mouse (optical)
etc..

The GF4 is new to my system, and I have had some lock-up problems lately. At random times, the monitor will go blank (not screen saver blank, loss of power/suspend blank!!) and my keyboard would lock up. I would have to reboot each time to get out of this.

So, I'm thinking video card problems for sure, but a day or two ago I got my system to come out of this strange state by picking up the mouse (the red light went off on mouse, and my system came back on).

Anyway, this happened about an hour or so ago, and I figured I'd try an old mouse to see if that was in fact the problem. I shut down my system, installed the old mouse, and booted back up. Now, I can't get back into Windows. I have a message that states:

The following file is missing or corrupted: 0\IFSHLP.SYS

The following file is missing or corrupted: 0:\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD
Type the name of the window loader (eg, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD)

Questions:
1) What the heck is this about?
2) How do I find these files/get windows back up?
3) Do you think my lock-ups are in fact mouse relate.

Thanks
Kevin

Well there seems to be a never ending source of bootup issues here , but I guess that is what the point of this forun is :D

I suspect that prior to you adding your newly acquired GF4 power hungry card that your system was running fine ? If that was the case then it is a good possiblity that your PSU isn't keeping it's side of the bargain of supplying a constant voltage to your system , so that would be my first starting point.

If your PSU is of good quality and and is powerfull enough for your system then you might want to check and add the 12v for the AGP Pro , check your manual on page 27 for the location of it which uses the same type of connector that your hard drive/cdrom uses.

I wouldn't think that changing your mouse caused your OS to corrupt certain files but then again anything is possible .

Here is Microsofts info on the first error IFSHLP.SYS
VMM32.VXD

Sounds like your Operating System is hosed if your not able to use those fixes .
