is there something out there in the form of a virus or whatnot that would just randomly cause this to fail?

I ask because i came home from work and tried to install a windows update and its telling me my copy of win 7 is not genuine. It was not saying this yesterday or this morning before i went to work. my comp was not restarted between when i left for work and when i came home.

I'm sitting here looking at my CD+CD key + genuine sticker / cert of authenticity. I purchased it from Newegg like 3 or so months ago and have been running this install for like a month now with no issue. No its not installed on any other comp, i took it out of the shrink wrap when i installed it. When prompted to reenter the CD key i did and it still says the same thing. I'm at somewhat of a loss on this one. Dont really want to have to revert to Vista.

I would contact Newegg and ask them why Microsoft is not validating the Win 7 license you purchased from them. Email them a screenshot of the license and error message. If they give you any hassles, just say if they can't provide you with the valid license that you paid for, you'll report it to Microsoft as counterfeit and pursue it in court if necessary

Windows sometimes flakes out. A quick call to MS should get you straight.

If you reset the BIOS recently or if the time in the BIOS or windows is off then you might get that. There are also other reasons.

It could have deactivated itself. Check if it asks you to reactive in the my computer properties window.

Here is their forum and lots of threads about it http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/threads

yea it says that i have to activate it in the properties window, if i hit activate it wont go says go online and resolve if i hit enter new key and put mine in it says the same thing

ok i must once again praise AT for being amazing. the link provided by ImDonly1 had a lot of great info in it, instead of making my own thread there i simply read the posts and tried the posted solutions for myself. seems to have worked fine as it validated

Maybe it would be helpful for other people if you posted what solution worked for you?

You can try to re-install the key from a command prompt with the command
slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

xxxxx is your key

slmgr.vbs -upk will uninstall a current key
slmgr.vbs /dli will show the current license status

The results take a few seconds to appear
type slmgr.vbs by itself to see the other options

Could be virus that attacked the reg key that stores the license info for your install...but i've never seen such a thing.

You can also try activating it through command prompt.
