so....

im gonna up and admit it, i have a volume license windows xp pro installed and i dont own it.

that said, i do have a valid key and disc of windows xp pro academic (i really did not want to do activation since well i swap out parts a lot).

that said, the new little star nag thing is coming up and really annoying and i dont want to reformat.

does anyone know how to change it so that i can use my academic key and make my volume license install think its academic and then activate thator am i just SOL and have to reinstall windows.

i think the first thing i did when that nag came up was browse the web on my linux box. this seriously is forcing me to linux more.

Let this be a lesson to you: Never let Windows automatically download and install anything!

Windows Gen Adv is Microsoft spyware, IMO. I didn't install it and have no intentions of doing so.

I've no idea if it can be removed; I would go ahead and wipe and reload, or maybe try using a semi-recent restore point.

gah i turned off system restore.

i guess i will have to reformat. i think with the sheer mediocrity of the OS microsoft has (not to mention it costs like $189 for xp pro) i cant really understand WHY people still use this.

the only real reason is that every computer on earth gets sold with it. i mean i have vista 5361 at work. and i cant see a SINGLE thing that is better about it. and the transparent windows and 3d alt-tabbing are pointless! ie7 sucks. and windows defender is really only for well idiots.

for the love of god if only linux had bigger market share so we could actually buy games, dvd ripping software etc for linux.

Do you at least have a Ghost Image stored somewhere, so you don't have to completely start from scratch?

haha no, i probably will just move all my files to my other partition and reformat. even if i had a ghost image it would be of the volume license version not the academic one that i have on a CD.

Hahaha, so you turned off system restore (one of the features that makes windows good) and now your angry because windows doesn't have any good features and you don't want to reinstall it.

Nice.

btw windows DOES have a sudo command, and it has done since NT.
