Windows full version for my buidup computer?

Hi, i am building my first pc and want to know where is good place to get the Windows XP full version?
Or should i get a win 98 full version than an upgrade of the xp?
Thanks!!

You have a couple of options.

  1. Upgrade - If you own a legal license for Windows 98 already that you no longer use, an upgrade license of XP will be the cheapest route. You do not need to install 98 on your computer first. You can install an upgrade copy of XP on a "fresh" hard drive; the setup program will prompt you to insert your 98 CD for upgrade verification.
  2. OEM - This is a full version of XP, and is also an inexpensive option. The OEM license is tied to the hardware you install it on and is not transferable. If you replace your rig down the line, you'll need a new copy of XP. Microsoft also does not provide technical (phone) support for OEM copies.
  3. Retail - This is a full version of XP, but is the most expensive of the three options. The benefit is that you get technical support from Microsoft and you can transfer a retail license between machines as many times as you like.

There are many places to buy XP. Newegg, Zip Zoom Fly and other popular hardware sites usually sell all three of the above licenses.

I cannot remember seeing an upgrade version being cheaper than OEM. I have regularly gotten OEM versions of XPpro for between $135-140; XPhome for $85-89.

So, the XP OEM i see on EBay will do the job?
And i just want this PC for basic stuff, some net, mostly gaming. Should i go with the home version or Pro?
Thanks!

Hmm, you may be right. I haven't checked XP prices lately. Still, OEM and Upgrade versions are considerably cheaper than full retail.
