This is somewaht OT but does the windows fiels and settings transfer wizard transfer programs or will I need to reinstall them manually?

You will need to reinstall them manually. It will sometimes give you a list of programs that need to be reinstalled after the transfer completes.

no
you have to reinstall

it is a very handy tool, but it won't install your programs on the other computer, just your stuff and the setting, hence the name "file and settings transfer wizard" . it would be called the "file and settings and programs transfer wizard" if it could move your programs

good luck!

I recommend this process.

1. Create an image with Acronis True Image or Ghost
2. Restore that image onto the NEW computer.
3. DO NOT LET THE NEW COMPUTER BOOT instead get your Windows XP SP2 cd and boot to it and hopefully it will find the installed Windows and ask if you want to repair it, choose yes.
4. Windows Repair will keep all your settings and programs installed but will load new drivers needed for the NEW COMPUTER.
