windows file sharing

what exactly do i need in order to get windows xp pro/home to share files. one of my comps has xp pro and is connected to the router by cable, and the other is home connected wirelessly. i have problems even with the xp firewalls off, and my sygate firewall off. i can see the other computer but i cant send files to and from shared folders. what services need to be on in order for file sharing to work, and what needs to be installed on the network connection (tcp/ip, ipx etc). could this be a problem with my router? i have a linksys wrt54gs wireless router. for now i have been using ftp to transfer files between the systems but i would rather not have to turn the ftp server on and off every time.

first makesure your computers are connected to the same network, workgroup is setup by default, then the users need to be on both pc's with the user name and passwords exactly the same. after you finish setting that up, the you can start with the file sharing.

You say you can see the other computer -- like in Network Neighborhood? Do you have specific folders on the computer shared out ?

yes, ie, i can type in \\name-of-comp and see its network shares just fine, i only have problems when i try to copy files. always write protected and invalid file handle errors

Unless you just absolutely need TCP/IP for your home network, you might consider using only NetBEUI as the protocol. Using it instead of TCP/IP always helped me get rid of the naggy errors when using simple file-sharing.

that won't help this. He needs to fix permission issues. Make sure usernames and passwords match on the machines, and make sure the share allows access to the remote username.
