tried posting my problem over in the help forum but didn't really get much in the way of replies so thought I'd try here.

I had one of my online accounts hacked so I got a bit aggresive scrubbing my computer and seemed to have disturbed some things that are safe/otherwise needed. I've got windows update working again but still having the problem with windows explorer crashing/lockign up. about the only trigger i can find is using an internet browser, i can play games forever and nothing else is done as much as games or internet use that I've found to trigger the problem. sfc and regscans report nothing bad.

In your first post, you say Internet Explorer (IE) is the problem. Here you cite Windows Explorer. Which is the problem? What version of Windows are you using? Did you try a repair install?

Its windows vista. The crash events always show explorer.exe as the cause. It just happens that it only crashes after a certain amount of browser use. As far as I can tell, you can't do a repair install.

Repair install with Vista is easy. Boot with the Vista disk. In a post hacking environment,, odds are something is corrupted. Your best course is a complete reinstall.

When I tried booting with the disk in it didn't allow me to select repair install, only the option which would have wiped the drive.
