Has anyone ever gotten this windows XP Pro error Code:

General Protection Fault Error, please delete file.


I get this message every time I start up.......

This message started with my latest install of windows XP pro on a brand new laptop hardrive.

Looking for Ideas on how to get it to stop
 
Im following your advice....but one thing I dont understand.......This error code is on a brand new harddrive for my dell laptop....I bought the drive, installed it, loaded windows and it was just after it finnished loading that I got the error message....I never got to the internet......Can this trojan hand out in the bios?
 
Spyware infection is unlikely in those circumstances.

What else does the error message say? Does it say WHAT file to delete?

I would assume some program is trying to run on startup that's causing the error. Run MSCONFIG and check the apps listed in the Startup tab. Uncheck anything that you have any doubt about (you can always enable it again later). Windows doesn't REQUIRE anything to be checked, but some of those apps will be necessary for you printer, scanner, anti-virus, etc.

Make a restore point first (just in case) and uncheck them all, reboot, if the error goes away, turn each on on one by one until you find the culprit.

ok, i went to msconfig.....start-up.. I deselected everything and it started up without the error: "General Protection Fault Error, please delete file".


Then.... one by one I selected each item.....until i got the error code.....it comes from this file

MSRB which is located in C:\windows\system32\msrb.exe

Should I just delete it ..............standing by for advaice

I can't find any reference to that file on google. If it's causing the error then definately leave it unchecked.

Just because it's causing an error doesn't mean it's malicious. Could be a legit file that's gotten corrupt.

Do a file search for the file and right click on it and select properties. If it's a legit file it should give you a publisher's name and a description of what the file does. That might give you a clue what it's for.

Could just be some resigration program you don't need.
 
Glad to hear it! HOWEVER, just to play safe, I would restore it from the recycling bin and rename it (add .old on the back of the filename for instance).

I don't like to delete anything whose identity is in question. Better to rename it.

The other day I inadvertantly double clicked on a .scr file that was right under a .mpg file I was meaning to open. It didn't do anything obvious but I had a bad gut feeling about it. The file deleted itself just from trying to open it. I ran the virus scan and found nothing. I was getting the same message you were getting everytime I booted up. When I looked at the properties for that msrb file it showed the exact date and time that I had opened that screen saver file by mistake.

I unchecked it from within msconfig and I deleted the file but msconfig is still coming up with it in the box. It is uncheced but I want to get rid of it. Did you notice this too? Did you have to go into regedit and get rid of the entry?

Hi,

I had this same problem and the property info on the msrb file showed the exact date and time I had tried opening a screen saver file by mistake....This was not a screen saver that came with Windows but rather something that was downloaded with a bunch of other files off the internet, unintentionally.

I unchecked it in msconfig and I deleted the file but msconfig is still coming up with it in the box. It is uncheced but I want to get rid of it. How can I get rid of the entire entry in msconfig? Do I have to go into regedit and get rid of the entry? Under location in msconfig it says "softare\microsoft\windows\currentversion.... the rest is cut off. All of these locations looked like registry entries rather than file locations.

As long as it's unchecked and doesn't re-check itself, you're fine.

The only way to actually remove the entry is to edit the registry (risky if you don't know what you're doing). A safer way is to use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel: http://www.mlin.net/

You will need to re-check it in MSConfig so that Startup Control Panel sees it. Then you can delete it from within Startup Control Panel.

BTW: Startup Control Panel is a MUCH better way to edit your startups than MSConfig. As I explain in my spyware removal instructions, MSCONFIG is easily compromised to hide spyware and viruses: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml
