Windows doesn't recognize USB ports, PCI cards, sound...

Hello,

I recently was trying to fix my iPhone but it wasn't being recognized by iTunes. This prompted me to go to device manager and remove the iPhone drivers several times (which were showing up as errors) in an attempt to get it to work. I may have removed another USB driver that was coming up as error. I then uninstalled iTunes and its associated components (Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support, a couple others that were suggested for removal by Apple) and rebooted.

Lo and behold, none of my USB devices are recognized (or even powered). My sound driver appears to be broken (the volume icon in system tray shows an X), and my PCI cards aren't working (evidenced by my wifi card grayed out).

This is on a Vista x64 installation Desktop, about 2.5 years old. System has been stable for the whole time. I don't think my motherboard (Gigabyte EP45) is fried as it boots up fine. USB peripherals work and are powered in all cd-booted environments. Drive reads and writes fine. Therefore I think the problem is confined to my windows installation - however I can't do ANYTHING in windows due to the fact that my usb ports are not working. PS/2 mouse does not work either. I don't have built-in bluetooth so I can't use a bluetooth keyboard.

I have tried Windows repair CD to no avail. I think it could be fixed if I could access device manager but that seems like a lost cause at this point... is it possible to fix the drivers (if thats what it is) through a bootcd or to access the device manager at all??

Any advice IT gurus? I'd rather not wipe and reinstall as I don't have time to do that for a bit... I have access to my files via bootCD so I can backup but this came suddenly out of nowhere so I'm not as prepared...

Thanks in advance guys.

So you can boot into Windows? Did you try reloading drivers for all items in device manager with issues?

I would reload your chipset drivers.

I can boot into windows... but I can't use any input devices so I can't really go into device manager...

any way to get into device manager on bootcd?

Check your motherboard manufacturer's site for the latest BIOS and drivers. Most manufacturers list the problems their newer versions address. Re-install any that have been updated or otherwise aren't working.

Also, have you checked the USB port settings in the CMOS?

Oh wait, you can't access device manager at all? Try clicking on start then in the search box type devmgmt.msc

thanks for replies so far...

I'll try the mobo drivers and BIOS, not sure if thats it... USB port settings in CMOS are fine...

also as for device manager... I can't do ANYTHING in windows install because my usb ports are out - no input devices to control anything...
