Windows Disc not booting?

Hey,

My friend has this weird issue with the Win 7 64bit disc, He has the CD Drive as the first device to boot, and In windows can explore the disc. But when it comes time to install Windows it wont recognize it and just continues on to Windows XP, He put in his XP disc and it booted up to install. So we thought it was a bad disc, he went to exchange it and the new one does the same thing!

This is really odd, I never heard of this issue before.

any ideas?

^ Yea he says it opens up but said he cant upgrade and install from Windows Xp and to boot it up.

Ill ask about the bios

His specs

Mobo - ASUS Maximus Formula
CPU - Intel duo core E6550
Mem - 2x2 I forget the brand of it (I only need 2gb minimum)
GeForce GTS250 GFX card
Hi Def sound card that came with the board
WD Raptor 140gb HDD
ASUS CD/DVD drive

Sorry, just skimmed it. I should read posts better.

It sounds like, for some reason, it will boot from CD's but not DVD's. Try burning a Linux disc on each, and see if it will boot both of them. What motherboard is it?

Perhaps is not a bootable disk... i don't think is a problem with dvd booting. If you are thinking to install 7 then i imagine you don't have an old system.

I am not there with him so its hard lol

But It seems he set up his other drive to boot instead of the DVD drive ( bleh)

Any how now when he boots it up, it goes to the windows 7 background and a mouse, but the screen to install next, next..ect does not pop up.

so many weird issues, lol all user error so far, but what could he be doing wrong for this part? I dont think you can get it wrong at this part.

Bad disc, bad drive, bad memory, bad motherboard, or bad PSU is my guess.

I had those exact symptoms happen (Windows 7 background with no mouse / next screen) when I had a bad stick of memory. It did eventually continue with the install after many tries, but it was extremely slow and would BSOD randomly.

This could be a possibility in this case, since Windows Xp probably takes a fraction of the memory that Windows 7 does during install.
