Windows dictionary

When I type a misspelled word using my computer, a spell checker attempts to correct my spelling. I have occasionally added an incorrect change and after several months of using this spell checker, I know there are many incorrect entries in its dictionary.

I would like to look at my spell checker dictionary and correct (remove) the incorrect entries.

Can anyone tell me how to do that?

Uh, There is no spell checker built into Windows. What program(s) are you typing in and using a spell checker?

Uh, There is no spell checker built into Windows. What program(s) are you typing in and using a spell checker?

I guess it's mostly with Firefox. I went to their on-line Help and it told me where that would be saved on my computer (under Mozilla/Profile) in a file called persdict.dat, but there are only 4 or 5 words there that I have put into the dictionary. None of the poor variants that I introduced with my poor typing. So that didn't work.

Also, there is a spell checker at work in this forum... I don't know where that is resident (Firefox ?).

My problem is the many variations that come up when I type in say, SATA, and it comes up with some variations that probably belong with the spell checker, but also some that I know I caused by "Adding" to the dictionary So I'd like to delete those variations that I caused that just create confusion...

If you're talking about the browser spellcheck, persdict.dat is the file you want. It's possible that you have multiple profiles for Firefox stored on your computer, so be sure to check for ALL instances of persdict.dat until you find the one you're after.

Thanks. I did check 3 copies of persdict.dat with no luck to find anything where all those errors of mine would reside, but eventually found a copy on my notebook that was fertile with errors and my additions.

Is that the same spell checker I'm getting when I use this forum? Do you have a spell check on the forum? Is it through Firefox also? For example, when I do a search in AnandTech Forum, I use noel instead of noels, so I have both versions in search (dictionary) on one of my computers and I would like to delete one...

The forums do not have a spell checker of any kind (unfortunately). The spell checker you are seeing is in Firefox itself.

The additions have to be stored somewhere.

Create an addition and the search yoru drive for the timestamp of a file that was modified within the current minute.

That should give you a clue where the additions are stored.
The file may not be cleanly readable, but you should at least get a flavor and will know where it is.
