Windows crashing...again

I have been assembling computers for a client around here (my wife's boss as a matter of fact). I have a DFI AK76, runnign a Athlon TB 1.2 (not oc'd) with 128 MB DDR (Kingston), 32MB S3 Savage4 AGP, 30GB WD (7200) hd, and a linksys nic, powered with a 350W Deer ps.

I have been getting a lot of lock ups. I get them when I install service patches for office 2000, I get them sometimes when I try to access the CDROM and I get them some times when I try to save a file on the network.

I have some event ids that are errors that point at the cdrom (only once though) and other times there is nothing in the event viewer OR in Dr.Watson. Again, it doesn't always happen when accessing the CDROM.

All of the via drivers and amd drivers are loaded. The service patches for WIN 2K are loaded too. I am just about ready to beat the crap out of the machine, but I thought I would ask for help first.

Anyone have any ideas? I am at my witts end 🙁

I think your problems point to a heat issue? Have you checked the temperatures of the machine? If you don't have any software to monitor your temps download Motherboard Monitor 5. Boot the machine up, load up motherboard monitor and try and stress the machine as much as possible to see what the temps raise too. If you need something to really stress your machine download Prime95 and just run that.

When you built the machine did you install the Heatsink and Fan correctly? Did you use thermal paste (or at the very least a thermal pad)?

Report back with your findings.

Good luck.

the S3 Savage 4 video card has always had problems with win2k. the default drivers and the new drivers from S3 are crap. they always cause lockups and blue screens in my experience. try another video card and check for IRQ sharing. you may have to turn off ACPI in the BIOS and in the Operating System--Under Device Manager--->Computer--->ACPI--> change to Standard PC

I did have a hardware/temperature monitor on board prior - the temps were solid around 40-41C. The heat sink and fan were applied at the place where I bought it - it was a mobo/processor combo. Therefore I assume that the hsf has the standard thermal pad that comes on most heatsinks....the one I have is a coolermaster brand although at the moment, I cannot remember which one (it is approved for the 1.2 however!).

I will download the monitor and stress out the machine and see what happens. As for the vid card....*&^%, I hope that is not the problem since I just received 5 more for the next machines! :disgust: I had thought about disabling ACPI since I have seen a lot of complaints that were solved by this problem.

If it IS the vid card.....anyone want to buy 6 of them?! 😀

I will try all these things and get back to everyone - probably not for a couple days though!
