ok, w/in the last couple of days, i've noticed my windows system clock is too fast. 1min on the computer = ~49 seconds of real time passing. I haven't installed anything, but the only thing i've been doing much of is ripping some of my dvds w/ gknot. Have never had this problem before tho.

running XP Pro... anyone else run into this? AVG's latest updated virus list apparently picked up something in the exe of mirc, but nothing else.. don't know if it's anyhow related.

I have never heard of any thing like this. I did not find anything in a quick check of the M$ Knowledge base. At least you will be on time if not early.

It would be something with your MB not the OS. Maybe it is the battery...but that should have any effect on time while the computer is on. Hmmm.

HAAHHA

at dell i got calls on this at least THREE times a day...ahh, the memories.....

It was almost always caused by two things:

1.) antivirus
2.) some other installed program (roxio, gator, kazaa, timeupdaters, etc)

if that wasnt it, we had an xp time patch.....best way to test was to go into the bios, set the correct time, and leave it in the bios....come back..if its still right, youve got a windows problem..if its wrong, you have a battery problem (usually caused by the battery)

The system clock is maintained by an RTC. RTC devices are highly accurate (by definition, they need to be) and there's no way a failing battery can cause this. Unless the RTC is defective, there's no reason for this. Other than that, maybe a software device keeps setting the time wrong (constantly, so that it looks like the time is running fast...)

In fact, a battery CAN cause this...Ive seen it several times..what normally happens is when we take out the battery we find some oxidation on the battery that causes it to run fast like that

if the battery is the culpruit, why doesn't it effect it in the bios? Antivirus software you say? i'm using AVG... i'll shut it off and see what happens... as for other programs, i cannot remember installing anything in the past two days.... i did update dead aim last week tho.
