windows cd key problem

my friend has a dell computer, and is upgrading it, he wants to keep the hard drive, but we may have to format it, is there any way to retrieve the cd key within windows so that I can let him use my cd but his own key?

He has to use his cdkey. If the system is a recent model, the key should be on a sticker on the side of the system. Otherwise, call Dell.

You didn't say which OS but, since you mentioned upgrading, I'll assume that it's Win98.

Run regedit, then:
Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click on SOFTWARE
Click on MICROSOFT
Click on WINDOWS
Click on CurrentVersion
On the right frame, scroll to find the entry " ProductKey "
