Windows Backup 5.0 Question

I'm having some problems getting the scheduled backups to work on Windows 2000 Pro using the Windows Backup 5.0 software. All I want to do is backup everything on my D: drive every night at midnight using a three tape rotation. If I use a blank tape or erase the tape, the backup works fine. If it's not blank, the backup doesn't happen. Is there a way to tell the backup software to automatically erase the tape before the backup?
