Hi all,
Have had this problem before, but last time my hardware wasn't embedded on the motherboard, so I was able to fiddle around more, and the problem is definitely Windows, and not the hardware.
Just upgraded a parent's computer....new mainboard (MSI KT4V), Athlon XP 1600+, Geforce 2MX, and 256MB of RAM, removed the sound card since the mainboard has the ALC650 on it. Used my standard trick of booting into Windows (Windows Me in this case, yech, but it's what's there) in safe mode, removed all the old devices, rebooted again, added the ACPI BIOS, watch everything go.
It's all back up again, except I can't get the AC97 Audio to be listed in the Preferred Playback or Preferred Recording device boxes...It's not even a listed choice. The driver is installed okay, and says no conflicts exist, it's operating properly. (I turned a lot of things off on the mainboard temporarily just in case, still didn't fix the problem). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Volume Control/Audio Codecs/etc. from Windows and put them back in, hasn't helped. Made sure I was up to date with DirectX 8.1, hasn't helped. The last time I had problems with this (in another system), it was with one of those horrible Ensoniq/Creative AudioPCI 64 cards, but I got it working through changing PCI slots, and then editing the registry. That was a long time ago. Anyone have any suggestions?
