This laptop I'm trying to get to work has windows 98 First edition on it. I am trying to install a PCMCIA linksys wireless adapter on it. I installed the software, I installed the card, the card is recognized, the card even picks up the wireless network, it even seems to take the password but it will not get an IP from the router. I know the router is working, have a newer windows XP computer that gets onto the wireless network just fine. Is 98 first edition just too old to work with linksys? I mean I know the linksys software is supposed to work with 98 and for the most part does install. Do you think it just would not work or is windows 98 just corrupted and would have to be reinstalled to get it to work?

Short answer is probably 'yes.' Win98 first edition is over 10 years old - and wireless hardware was not common in computer circles. Upgrade to 98SE if possible. It's not a software problem, it is a hardware and driver problem.

You may have to go into the network settings and manually install a tcp/ip protocol for the wireless adapter.

Well, tcp/ip was installed for the adapter I did not have to add it. I went in there and even manually sepcified an IP it would have gotten from the dhcp server and I was able to ping the IP I gave it but could not ping the default gateway which I manually specified as well. So I don't know, I figured winsocks are corrupted or it's just a case of win 98fe just being too old.

Windows 98 + Wireless =

I won't even configure it for customers anymore. Even if "i" can get it working, the customer's can never figure out how to use the card's wireless utility software to connect.

...wow, such irony, just yesterday i had a customer with the exact same issue in win98 laptop, asking to install an old wireless Xircom combo card for networking, and it wasn't getting the IP properly when wireless but it worked immediately using RJ45

this particular model was a nice one, the Xircom combo PCMCIA card accepts Modem56k+RJ45/100mbps+WirelessB obviously an old model designed for late Win9x / early WinXP era.
