I have just built a computer and I told my dad to pick up a copy of WinXP from the store on his way home. He picked up a upgrade copy. :( Before I go return it, I phoned some local computer shops and one still has a few copys of Windows 98. If I buy Windows 98 and then upgrade to Windows XP, will there be any difference in the final OS? I assume upgrading is going to take more space on the hard drive. Also, during when Win98 is installed, is it possible to have hardware errors because of all the new technology that has been developed since then?

All you need is a cd from any older MS operating system.
Start the new PC and boot up the XP upgrade CD. It will stop and ask for proof of an older OS. Put in any thing you might have. '98, ME, 2000.......
When XP is happy, it will continue to do a nice clean install.

Getting 98 to load and run on your new hardware will be a real pain-in-the-a$$. If it works at all.

You'd have to manually spoon-feed the chipset drivers one at a time with a reboot between each. I tried on my nForce2 board and that was the only way I got the nForce drivers to install.
