Ok, I have a older laptop that I need to get working. Its very old and it cannot handle anything greater than 98se. It has window 98 on it now but I need it to connect to the internet but none of the wireless cards I have found will work, even with the newest drivers. I have a netgear card and it will work with 98 se but not 98. I have a full version of 98se on a cd with the productID#. But when I go to set up it tells me I already have an OS installed and it will not go any further. So I need to just get 98 off the computer right and boot the computer from the CDROM after that right?? How do I go about doing this, please help. Thanks

Do I have to reformat the hard drive? if so what are the steps?

or point me to a website that tells me how.

There are upgrade versions of 98SE that you could use so you don't wipe the laptop clean.

Else, you can use the Win98SE cd to boot from & get to a command prompt. Use fdisk to wipe the harddrive clean.

I have used a wireless card with this laptop before withno problem till the card broke. It was a Dlink.

This is what it says under the wireless-B notebook adapter Properties:

Device Status: The NDIC.VXD, NTKERN.VXD device loaders(s) for thsi device could not load the device driver (Code 2)

I know they make a upgrade CD but all i have here is window 98se full version, i dont care if i lose anything from the computer. NO big deal at all

I have the win98 startup disk, what do i need to do with this??

I have reformatted and installed windows 98se but not it says this:

You started your computer with a version of MS_DOS incompatible with this verision of Windows. Insert a Startup diskette matching this version of Windows and then restart.

The system has been halted. Press Ctrl+ALT+Del to restart your computer.

I dont have a 98se start up disk, I have one for 98, what do i do???

It looks like you might be able to download what you need to make the startup disk here. It looks like you just download the files and dump them to a floppy.

Ok, I have 98se installed after formatting the hard drive and running the windows 98se cd and everything. But now I downloaded the start up disk from the website above. I put it on a 3.5in and put the disk in and restarted the computer like it said. But it says now;

You started yoru computer with a version of MS-DOS incompatible with this version of Windows. Insert a Startup diskette matching this verision of Windows and then restart.

The system has be halted. Press Ctrl+Alt+del to restart your computer.

Any ideas??

The file that is on the disk is win98se.exe, it is the file from the website that PasticJesus posted.

Help please

Don't COPY the win98se.exe onto the floppy. Double-click win98se.exe, which will execute a program to create a boot disk on your floppy.

Ok i did create a boot disk but still comes up the same thing. Do i need to format again and then use the disk?? It does not seem to read the disk. I have to have the 98se cd in when i boot right? It asked me where to boot from and I say hard drive, right? Should I try to reinstall windows 98se??

Wait a minute, if you have 98SE installed, why are you trying to use the boot disk?

well it is not completely installed yet.

I know you have read this but this is what it says.

You started yoru computer with a version of MS-DOS incompatible with this version of Windows. Insert a Startup diskette matching this verision of Windows and then restart.

The system has be halted. Press Ctrl+Alt+del to restart your computer.

I have a 98se full verision and a boot disk now. I formatted the hard drive before TRYING to install windows 98se and it seemed to work till it says what I have above. what should i do.This is what I did:

I formatted the hard drive and then inserted the windows98se cd (FULL version) with product id #. i booted from the cd and went through all the steps there and then when i restarted it like it said to do it came up with what i typed above.

Also when i try to boot it it wants to boot up in safe mode

Boot disk is the same thing as the Start up disk?

Thanks alot

Ok, I'm not sure what you did so far, so I'll just say start from the beginning. I posted these instructions before:

1. First you'll need a bootable floppy disk. You can set one up from within Windows or download an image from Bootdisk.com.
2. Boot using the floppy drive. When you get to the A: prompt, type FDISK.
3. Using FDISK, you'll see the partition for your C: drive that contains your current windows install. Delete this partition, then create a new one in its place. Exit FDISK and reboot using the floppy disk. Be sure to choose the option "With CD-ROM support" when you reboot.
4. Type FDISK /MBR to make sure that no viruses are in the master boot record of your hard drive.
5. Format your fresh C: partition by typing FORMAT C: from the A: drive.
6. Once your format is complete, insert your Windows 98 CD. Type D: (or whatever drive letter your CD-ROM drive was assigned), then type SETUP. You should have a clean install of Windows now.
7. Before you connect your computer to the internet, be sure to download and install any Windows 98 updates. Download them on another computer, burn them to a CD, then install them on your Windows 98 box.

I have these options:

Delete Primary DOS partition
delete extended DOS partition
Delete Logical DOS Driver(s) in the extended DOS partition
delete non-dos Partition

It is the primary DOS partition, right?

From the floppy? Most machines attempt to boot from the floppy drive first, so as long as it's in when you reboot you'll be ok. If not, you'll have to enter your BIOS setup screen (usually F1, F2, or DEL when you first boot and the RAM is tested) to change the boot order.
