windows 98 registry error

A friend of mine is having the following problem. When he starts his computer it boots up and he gets this registry error warning telling him to reboot so windows will fix the error. However, when he reboots the messagge comes up agin and is not repaired. How do I solve this problem? Could it be a virus? If I reinstall windows using a boot disk and reloading win98 will this correct this problem? Any tips appreciated.

I experienced the same error before with my bro's pc. I tried narrowing it down to the power supply, or the memory. I replaced the power supply, and the error was still there. So I replaced a stick of RAM, and viola, the registry error was fixed...
 
A reinstall of Windows 98 will not solve your problem. You have a corrupted memory stick... I had this same problem on my old computer.

As a temporary work around so you can use your computer until you replace your RAM, click Start, then Run, and type in scanreg.ini ... edit the value that says Backup Registry (check registry) ... and change it to 0 ...

That way, you will not be forced to restart .. but do realize that your RAM is corrupting all your data and system files...
You can use Ctrl Alt Del to kill the message telling you to restart so you can use your comp to change the scanreg.ini settings.
 
i had this problem when overclocking my system. lowering the fsb speed and/or backing off the ram timings cured mine. best of luck! bodinski

that happened to me too.
 
I didn't think bad ram could corrupt data, I thought the main reason for corrupt data was failing hard drives developing bad sectors and such, could be wrong tho.
 
A friend of mine had this problem with Win98-SE
& if I ran setup again, it first did a "registry repair"
and then starts the setup.
After it finishes the repair & starts the setup I just "cancel setup".
I think it's happening because he has the computer on a table
that shakes. The printer really gets it moving.
He's trying to keep it away from his toddler so he's afraid to put
it on the floor.
