Windows 98 recurring registry errors

RBBRMADE

Senior member
I have an IBM PC running Windows 98.
I replaced a bad hard drive. When I booted for the first time after imaging the new drive, I got a registry error, which Windows automatically fixed and forced a reboot.

The PC will give a registry error every third or fourth boot. Registry checker will fix the registry, and the machine will work good again for another 3 or 4 boots.

I found out that disconnecting the optical drive will stop the registry problems.
I have tried replacing the optical, replacing the cable, and even swapping the IDE channels, and if an optical drive is connected, it will error.

I tried replacing the PSU earlier with no change. Memtest shows 0 errors., and I have tried numerous sticks of RAM.

Any ideas?

Thanx,
Ron

Try a different optical drive. Failing that, update your BIOS, and the optical drive's firmware if possible.

How about booting in Safe Mode...then go to Device Manager. You will no doubt see more than one instance of your Optical Drives in the list. I'd delete them all and let Windows redetect. Same for your hard drives. Let the redetection occur on reboot to regular Windows startup (not safe mode).

This should clear out all old entries for your drives, and refresh with current.

You're right it is a 2153...
I had already tried that site. The links are dead to the BIOS updates.

Thanx anyway,
Ron
