Windows 98 questions

I originally wanted to put windows 98 on my net book but I am unable to find drivers for anything. I want to play some old windows and dos games. I tried installing to a VM first but I have a problem. Is there any way to get 3d acceleration working for a windows 98 VM?

Would I be better off installing Ubuntu and wine?

VMware Workstation and VirtualBox let guests have 3D acceleration, however I have no idea if you'll be able to find Win9X drivers for it. You can probably play the DOS games in DOSBox, but getting Win9X stuff working on a modern OS can be a chore because there were a lot of hack games that accessed hardware directly which isn't possible any longer.

WINE is a good option, but you should check out the app DB to see how well the games work before diving into that.

Thanks for the reply. I know that virtual box does not have 3d acceleration for anything older than XP. I will check out the wine app DB since a new version of wine was just released.

If Lucas Arts (Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Fate of Atlantis) or Sierra games are among those games you want to play, check out http://www.scummvm.org/ . It is a virtual machine to play many old dos games on new operating systems that has continuously expanded by it's user base.

Can't you find most dos games online now days? Like others have said you will have a hard time getting win98 running on new systems, more trouble than its worth.

seriously, games that require 9x or older systems would happily run in pure software rendering, just run them in virtual machine and don't worry
