Windows 98 Problems

Hi,
I decided to go ahead and install Windows 98SE on this new pc. I got half way through the install and when it got time to install drivers for devices it asks me for a file (Mostly .dll files) off the Win98SE cd which cannot be found. I direct it to the Win98 cd and it still can't find the file. What's up with this?

I've installed Windows several times and never gotten an error like this before. What could be the problem?

I'd appreciate any help or advice.

TIA,

Sal

Some say leave all your cards in when you install a new OS, but in this case, it might be worth taking everything non-essential out, ie graphics, sound, etc, etc,
Then add them one at a time and install them.
Try that.

Is this a "backup" copy? If so, that's the problem. Otherwise, I dunno. Good luck.

Try pointing the installer to

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

when Windows asks for a dll in a curious and unexpected way.

Occasionally, the installer will go haywire, and ask for files it has already installed, but when you redirect it to the original CD, it will not want to install the files, because they are already present in the abovenamed system folder. It seems like there is no way out, but there is.

By getting Windows to install files from a location where they are already installed, you will be short-circuiting this bug / feature and getting things to work. Hopefully.

I have gotten a number of otherwise unrecoverable systems to function using this trick.

I still suggest that you install Linux instead of Windows.

Hi again,

I tried everything mentioned and it still didn't work, so I just did an fdisk and reinstalled Win98SE from scratch. Guess what? It worked fine and the system is running perfectly now with all the drivers installed for all the hardware. Go figure, eh?

Thanks for all your help!
