First post on this message board so please direct me to the right place if this isn't it.

In the past few weeks my pc has effectively gone downhill, and I'm thinking it's
probably a virus, but I need to know a)if it really is a virus or just some other
problem or b) how to remove the virus if there is one.

I'll describe what's up.

I do have a firewall, it is Zone Alarm Pro 2.6.357.

On my desktop, a few of the icons will not properly access a program.
Whenever I double click on one of these, I get an error message saying
that Windows Explorer has performed an illegal action and will shut down.
I have noticed that the only icons that do this are ones that were originally
on the computer when I first got it (Recycle Bin, My Computer, Internet
Explorer, etc...) Also, when I try to access any file on the C drive through the
find option on the start menu, i get the same error message that I mentioned
above. Also, before it wouldn't even open, Internet Explorer was having trouble
opening Java Applets. I tried to install a copy of java on to my computer but
the applets still would not work. I've looked on the "close program" dialog
box and the only thing that seemed suspicious was something called "winboot"
. I did a google search for a virus called winboot and the only information I
got was that there is such a virus but the only other thing mentioned was
that it was a trojan, specifically Vampire 1.2 Trojan.

Once you have discovered what virus is infecting your system either the virus checker will remove it or you may need to download a tool for this (if there is one) or maybe some kind of method for solving....checkout Norton.com.

side note....Windows 98 was renound for explorer crashes anyway!

I tried the link you guys provided me in the first reply and for some reason the
program does not execute properly. In the java dialog box the following came up:

LoadName = SDMResource_en-US

ERROR: thread applet-trend/javascan/JavaScan.class JavaScan::init() imcompatible Plug-in exists, re-install is needed!

java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: list

at trend.javascan.JSFile.list(Native Method)

at trend.javascan.FilePanel.set_dir(JavaScan.java:144)

at trend.javascan.JavaScan.start(JavaScan.java:1115)

at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(Unknown Source)

at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)

ERROR: thread applet-trend/javascan/JavaScan.class Applet::stop() did not been invoked before destroy!

Dude, your best bet is to save whatever you can to CDR or ZIP. Blow away Win98, reformat the HD, then reinstall Win98 and D/L all of the Windows Updates for IE 5.5 or 6 (whatever your pleasure is ;)) And get an AntiVirus s/w! heh. Cut your loses and start fresh.... it would be better in the long run. Now, that's if you can.? G/L on whatever you decide.
**If you save things make sure you have an Antivirus s/w running with latest updates b4 you throw everything back on your drive. ;)

If you can download yet, you might try this program. It is free for personal use and it has been pretty good for me in finding and removing virus's.
