Windows 98 Problems (settings, shutdown)

Hello,

My uncle has a Win98 machine that I recently put a new HD in because the other one failed. All the data on the old HD was moved over to the new HD. Before we bought the new HD, The old HD was low-level formatted and Windows was reinstalled, so the installation of Windows on the new HD is pretty fresh.

Anyhow, some problems have been arising ever since the new HD/Windows Install..

1 - Display Properties won't Stick
The screen resolution will shrink down to 640*480 and the colors down to 256 in the display properties, so I reinstall the video driver and it fixes the problem... temporarily. It works for maybe a couple weeks and then happens again. I've tried to fix this several times. I don't know why it keeps reoccuring.

2- System won't completely power down :: FIXED!
If you go to Start -> Shutdown, Windows will shutdown, but the system won't power off. After it leaves Windows, the screen is black and the computer just sits there with its fans spinning. It has to be manually powered off each time. This usually did not happen before the Windows/HD install.

Any suggestions? I want to get this fixed once and for all.

Thanks!
Andrew

hi. i had a similar problem with the shutdown thing, a friends computer wouldnt power off after he had used the internet. do u have this problem?

Hmm, no, I don't think that's the problem... When I reinstalled the video drivers, I restarted, seen it was fixed, and tried to shutdown and it didn't work and I never connected to the net, so I don't think that's the problem..

Thanks, though 🙂

Any other suggestions?

Nope, no error messages... Windows seems to shut down perfectly fine like it normally would, the computer just doesn't power off automatically like it should..

No I haven't, but he does have the second edition which does include a lot of major fixes...

The display settings reset themselves again today :| Argh...

Any more ideas? 🙂

Thanks

Even with Win98SE, there are still quite a few patches available from Microsoft's site, some related directly to Shutdown issues.

With regard to the video issue, I can onlyt think of two items to check:

One possibility would be to boot into Safe Mode, remove any of the video card(s) in the Device Manager, then re-boot and add the proper video card back in. Sometimes multiple items in the video card area can cause problems,

Another possibility would be to do an anti-virus scan. I know sounds strange, but a few years back(when I was working at a computer store part-time), we had the same problem with the unit, and removing the virus fixed the problem. Unfortunately, I can't recall the name of the virus, only that the customer never reported further problems, and came in for periodic upgrades afterward. 🙂

This can be a result of a corrupt sound file in windows, remove all sounds assignd to windows like microsoft sound which seems to be the major culpurt.

control panels / power settings / APM . Enable APM the other options you dont have to worry about. It should make it able to shutdown automatically.

Hello again,

I downloaded a shutdown patch from MS which fixed the shutdown problem (not such a surprise there)..

But the problem with the settings going "goofy" is still occuring. Recently I've noticed it keeps the screen resolution, but the colors go down to 16.

Right now I do not have a monitor driver installed, I could not find a CD for it when I loaded on Windows 98. If I would find the drivers online, would there be a chance it could fix the problem?

The thing I tried last time was removing the video adapter in safe mode, and reinstalling it. What should I try next?

Thanks,

Andrew

Did you remember to install all the drivers for the motherboard/chipset in the new Win install?

Hello Again,

We've finally found out what is causing it, but have not come up with a solution to fix it. It happens when he boots up his computer without the monitor turned on (I guess it's a habit he's developed). Windows cannot find his monitor so it puts "Default Monitor" for the Monitor in the device manager. This is what causes the color reduction since the Default Monitor driver is pretty much crap. When you reboot with the monitor on, it will detect his monitor, load the correct driver which adds a few more colors to the display, but then you have to go into the settings to get it back up to 32-bit.

Harvey > No, I found some PIIX drivers on a floppy disk he had, but when I tried to load them they wouldn't work because the installation said they would only run under 95. Perhaps find updated ones on the net?

Marmaduke > I loaded the "Plug and Play Monitor" driver and the same problem occurs.
