yea i saw that. i don't think its quite worth the electricity it would use though.
You could actually hook up one of those X10 motion detectors and have it wake from standby. I saw a high-end picture frame that had a built-in IR motion sensor to turn on/off. (Hopefully that's not patented, because it's pretty darn obvious.)

I think the OP isn't really sure what he wants to be able to do with the spare laptop.

You could convert it into a great digital picture frame! I was actually thinking about doing that with my old laptop.

I came here to find out what could I do with it since I have an email/surfing rig. I am behind a router/firewall and the best suggestion that I've read was to use it as a storage device. (thanks spherrod) I actually done this in the past with this same machine. As far as specs, it's as slow as you can get. P100, 80MB RAM, 1.2 HD, but it has a docking station that I can put a HD, 3 PCI devices, 2 USB, and a SCSI device.

I'd love to work the bugs out of the display issues to get Linux loaded. But I feel so retarded when it comes to Linux. :|

somehow I don't think icons for 32bit color are going to be a perk with a laptop that at best will get 16bit color

Forget the display issues and just load it up with command line. You can do this in with CentOS or Fedor Core (I reccomment CentOS) by choosing a Server install and then choosing "Minimal" at the package customization at the end.
