Windows 98 lost CD rom

I get an error message that the drive for the CD is inaccessible, please insert disc and retry.

How can I fix this?

The computer is an athlon amd k6 w/Windows 98 SE and it's used by a kid who is all too happy to power off in the middle of some eduational first grade reader program on CD.

If it just up and stopped working, the CD-Rom might be bad.
