have reformatted my HDD and have created 2 partitions
using fdisk. I intend to install XO onto the othe partition.
I am trying to install Windows 98 onto my
C:\ drive, but the pc freezes up during the initial
restart after copying the files from the CD. I am not
given the opportunity to complete the installation or
enter the Product key. When I try to start the PC in Safe
mode, it hangs at the Windows logo. If I start the PC up
on normal mode I get the Windows logo "Getting ready to
run windows for the first time". The HDD and Floppy disc
lights stay on , but the screen freezes.

I have tried Step by Step Confirmation, but the screen
goes blank at the Mouse.vxd command, whether I press Yes
or No!

Any ideas anyone?

I have a Maxtor 40Gb HDD, 1Ghz Celeron Processor and
256Mb of RAM

Sounds like a hardware problem. Did you change/upgrade anything before this problem occured.

Try an install with only the video card in it or enabled if it's onboard. Remove all cards and disable onboard devices. If that works then add or turn on things one at a time.

The Pc was working fine before, with just Windows XP. I have created 2 partitions to enable me to run older games, eg Pandemonium 2 .

I have now stripped all the cards out other than the video card. Could there be a problem with my Windows 98 CD or is it possible that Fdisk and Format did not competely erase the previoslly installed XP? What other on board devices csn I safely disable?

:D Cheers Guys. I cracked it! I swapped over my video card and the installation continued. For some reason Windows 98 does not like my Voodoo 4500 video card!
